Comfort Suites Holiday Classic Day

SMITHFIELD, RI --- Chris Burns
(Merrimack, NH) scored a game-high 19 points including the
1,000th of his career in leading the Bryant University
men's basketball team to a 64-57 win over the University of
Bridgeport in the final game of the 2006 Comfort Suites Holiday
Classic Saturday. The win was also win No. 100 at Bryant for
coach Max Good. Good, in his sixth season at Bryant, is now
209-204 in his 15th year overall.
Bryant (7-4) shot 50 percent from the floor in the game and got
11 points from Nathaniel Sudlow (Brooklyn, NY) to
improve to 9-0 in its annual holiday tournament at the Chace
Athletic Center since 2002.
Bridgeport (6-2) came into the tournament with one of the
region's best records at 5-1 and following a seven-point win over
Merrimack Friday, the Purple Knights played the Bulldogs tough
throughout. Ernest Daney's (Manhattan, NY)
fast-break layup knotted the score at 45-45 with 10:53 remaining.
On Bryant's ensuing possession, Burns drilled a fall-away
three-pointer and was fouled in the process by Japhet
McNeil (Brooklyn, NY). The senior guard converted
the free throw for the 4-point play to stretch the Bryant lead to
56-51.
The Purple Knights would not go away as Casey Gordon
(Queens, NY) scored uncontested inside for two of his
team-high 14 points and more importantly, tying the game at 51-51
with 7:25 left.
Burns would come through for Bryant, drilling his fourth
3-pointer of the night and minutes later Ezeokoli hit a pull-up
jumper in the lane and Sudlow scored on an offensive putback and
the Bulldogs led 60-53 and never looked back.
Daney finished with 16 points for Bridgeport which made just 4
of 11 from three-point range and made only 5 of 12 free
throws. The Bulldogs were 7 of 16 from three and made 13 of
23 free throws.
Bryant will return to Northeast-10 Conference action on
Wednesday when the Bulldogs travel to Merrimack for a 7:30 p.m game
and return home to host Saint Rose next Saturday (3:30 p.m.).
