A two-run triple by sophomore Sarah Reed (DeWitt, NY) and a RBI double by Farrelly plated three of the runs.

GAME 7 #2 UMass Lowell 6, #1 Bryant 3

SMITHFIELD, RI - The No. 2 seeded UMass Lowell River Hawks advanced to the championship round of the Northeast-10 Tournament this afternoon, defeating host Bryant University 6-3.  With the win the River Hawks improve to 33-18 overall, while Bryant falls to 26-16.  The River Hawks will play tomorrow at noon, facing the winner of the morning match between No. 1 Bryant and No. 6 Southern Connecticut.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Jessica Valentini pounded a solo home run over the right field fence to lead off the inning.  River Hawk pitcher Kristen Mahoney (Burlington, MA) recovered nicely, striking out the next two batters and forcing the third to pop up to shortstop.  The second strikeout of the inning was the 368th of her career, breaking the school record of 367 career strikeouts held by Amber Gagnon (2000-03).

Junior OF Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, MA) evened the score 1-1 in the top of the third, sending the first pitch out of the park for her seventh home run of the season.  UML threatened to score again after freshman SS Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) and sophomore DH Brie O'Brien (Los Angeles, CA) reached base on an error and a walk respectively, but Janine Enos relieved starting pitcher Jennifer Bernier and got the next two outs.

The River Hawks broke the game open in the fourth inning, bringing home four runs to take a 5-1 lead.  Junior 3B Colleen Varone (Holliston, MA) led off the inning with a single.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior C Melissa Hanafin (Burlington, MA) and came around to score on a two-out single to center field by sophomore 2B Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA).  After a walk by Tanguay, Lajoie belted a double to deep left center field for two RBIs.  Lajoie came home on a single by O'Brien to cap off the scoring.

Mahoney led off the fifth inning with a home run, sending the first offering over the left field fence to extend the UML lead to 6-1.

Bryant cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Lindsay Connor led off with a double to right field and came around to score on a one-out double to right field by Amanda Wilbur.  Mahoney walked two to load the bases and was subsequently relieved by freshman Cyrilla Suker (Voorheesville, NY).  Suker gave up an RBI single to Valentini, but got the next two batters to fly out, leaving the bases loaded and ending the Bulldog threat.

Mahoney gave up four hits, three earned runs and four walks while striking out seven in 5.1 innings pitched to earn the win.  Suker threw 1.2 innings in relief, giving up two hits, two walks and striking out two to earn the save.  Enos suffered the loss, surrendering 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out four in 4.2 relief innings.
