MANCHESTER, NH - Junior guard Cara Johnson (Endicott, NY)
scored nine of her 17 team-high 17 points in overtime to help lead
the Bryant University women's basketball team to a 79-70 win over
Saint Anselm College here Tuesday night. The win is the
second in a row to open the season as the Bulldogs improve to 2-0
overall on the year, 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play.
In a game very similar to last year's meeting between Bryant and
Saint Anselm at Stoutenburg Gym, won by the Bulldogs in overtime,
the Bulldogs needed some late game heroics once again from guard
Lynne-Ann Kokoski (Hatfield, Mass.). In last year's meeting,
Kokoski hit a drive in the lane in the final seconds to force
overtime.
On Tuesday night, it was Kokoski again hitting a clutch basket
in the lane with 17.3 seconds left to once again force
overtime.
In the extra period, Johnson hit two free throws and followed
with a three-pointer from the top of the key to put the Bulldogs
ahead 68-63 and the Bulldogs never trailed from there. Two
Kelsey O'Keefe (Warren, Mass.) free throws and a steal and layup by
Courtney Schermerhorn (Lowell, Mass.) had the Bulldogs off on the
right foot in conference play.
Bryant trailed at the half, 38-36 but made 10 of 16 free throws
in the second half and 9 of 10 free throws in the overtime session
to pull out the win. Johnson was 5-for-10 from the floor and
had five rebounds while O'Keefe finished with 16 points and seven
rebounds.
Saint Anselm (0-2, 0-2 NE-10) was led by Justine Lyons' 15
points while Cassaundra Thorpe had 10 points off the bench before
fouling out.
The Bulldogs will host Franklin Pierce Sunday in the 2007-08
home opener at the Chace Athletic Center. Tipoff is set for
1:30 pm.
