SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Bryant junior Kevin Hoagland
(Glastonbury, CT) scored four goals and added three
assists while junior midfielder Jim Long (Durham,
NH) added three goals and one assist as the Bryant
University men's lacrosse team opened the 2008 with a convincing
16-7 win over visiting Adelphi Saturday at the Bryant Turf Field
Complex.
The Bulldogs, looking to avenge last year's season-opening loss
to Adelphi, blitzed the ninth-ranked Panthers from the start.
After a failed clear attempt on Adelphi's first possession, Long
took a feed from teammate Bryan Kaufmann (Putnam Valley,
NY) in front and one-timed a shot past Devin
Schneiderbauer just 1:20 into the game.
A minute later, the Bulldogs used crisp passing around the
Panther cage to quickly make it 2-0 as freshman Matt Larson
(Cheshire, CT) put a move on Panther defender Rory Duddy
and beat Schniederbauer to make 2-0 quickly.
Bryant (1-0) led 5-0 at the end of the first and pulled in front
6-0 at the start of the second on a goal by Kaufmann before Adelphi
would finally get on the scoreboard with a goal by Edward Edge at
11:48 of the second. Edge with score three times in the game to
lead Adelphi.
Adelphi (0-1) would get within 7-3 on Edge's second goal of the
game, but Bryant would counter with four unanswered score,
including a pretty goal from Kaufmann just before the break
as the Bulldogs headed to the locker room up 11-3.
In the second, the Panthers used two quick tallies to close the
Bryant lead to 12-5 but Long was there to rip home his third goal
of the game with 1:34 left in the third and the Bulldogs were never
threatened.
Michael Kennedy (Port Jefferson Station, NY)
played a strong game in goal for the Bulldogs to earn the
win. The senior made 13 saves - including a point-blank stop
on Edge in front of the crease in the fourth - as the Bryant
defense, led by the play of Matt Murnane (Rockville Centre,
NY), Corey MacDougall (Waltham, MA) and
Sean Pasley (Rexford, NY) held Adelphi to just 12
first half shots.
Bryant out-shot the Panthers 57 to 32 in the game. The Bulldogs
return to action next Saturday traveling to C.W. Post for a 1 p.m.
game.
