FOXBORO, Mass. - Junior Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, CT)
scored three goals and goalie Michael Kennedy (Port Jefferson
Station, NY) made eight saves in net as the No. 7 Bryant University
men's lacrosse team defeated sixth-ranked Merrimack 7-5 Saturday at
Gillette Stadium.
Participating in the Inaugural Lacrosse Classic and the first
ever lacrosse doubleheader at Gillette Stadium, site of the 2008
NCAA Lacrosse Championship in May, the Bulldogs took advantage of
an early failed clear attempt by the Warriors as Gary Crowley
(Baldwin, NY) scored unassisted to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at 11:07
of the first.
Merrimack (5-2, 2-2 NE-10) would even things up as scoring
sensation Gregg Rogowski added an unassisted tally of his own five
minutes later to make it 1-1.
Bryant (6-3, 3-1 NE-10) would added three more goals in the
second to take a 5-2 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Warriors 22 to 9 in the first half, but
in the second half, Merrimack started to get back on track.
After man-up goal late in the third by Bryant's Bryan Kaufmann
(Putnam Valley, NY) to give the Bulldogs their largest lead at 6-2,
Bryan McPhie helped kick-start a three-goal spurt by the
Warriors. A Rogowski goal after a strong rush up field made
it 6-4 a few minute into the fourth while Thomas Fennel made it a
one-goal game with a 20-yard blast at 6:20.
Bryant would hold on as Matt McKeefrey (Melville, NY) took a
pass from Kaufmann from and rifled a one-timer past Warrior goalie
Corey Spinale, thwarting any chance of a comeback.
Bryant All-American midfielder Andrew Hennessey (Wading River,
NY) had a tremendous day in the face-off circle. The
sophomore won 14 of 15 face-offs in the game.
Bryant will travel to Bentley on Wednesday night for a 7 pm
game.
