BULLDOGS CLAIM FIRST DIVISION I WIN
WITH, 2-0, TRIUMPH OVER SAINT FRANCIS (PA) AT DAY 2 OF FGC
TOURNAMENT
Boxscore vs.
Saint Francis (Pa) / Boxscore vs. Florida Gulf
Coast
FORT MYERS, FLA. - Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy,
Pa.) threw a four-hit shutout, striking out six batters to
help the Bryant softball team grab its first Division I win,
knocking-off future Northeast Conference rival Saint Francis (PA),
2-0, Saturday afternoon in day two of the Florida Gulf Coast
Tournament. The Bulldogs fell in their second game to the host
Eagles, 14-0.
Bryant jumped on Saint Francis (PA) early, scoring both of their
runs in the first inning as Laura Bowen
(Hudson, Mass.) and Ali Chouinard (Swansea,
Mass.) both crossed the plate without the Bulldogs getting
a hit. Bowen was hit by a pitch and eventually stole home.
Chouinard reached on an error and came around to score on another
error by the catcher.
The two runs would be plenty for Houseal who faced just 25
batters without surrendering a single walk on her way to the
shutout and first win of the year. Only three baserunners got as
far as second base, with one reaching third against the sophomore.
The best scoring chance for the Red Flash came in the fifth inning,
as they were able to get runners on first and second with one out,
but Houseal got a strikeout and a pop out to Chouinard at shortstop
to get out of the jam.
Lauren McCart (Vorhees, N.J.) collected two
hits in the victory, Kate Thomas (Bedford, N.H.)
and Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) each had one.
Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, N.Y.), Kristina
Kyzer (Boxboro, Mass.) and McCart each had a hit, but the
Bulldogs were knocked off by the host Florida Gulf Coast Eagles,
14-0.
The Eagles were paced by two homeruns off the bat of preseason
Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, Cheyenne Jenks, who
also drove in five RBI. Jenks went back-to-back with Samantha
Waldron as part of a five-run third inning. The Eagles took a 12-0
lead through three innings, tallying two more in the fourth as the
game was called after five innings.
Bryant will conclude play at the tournament Sunday morning, as
they look to avenge a heartbreaking loss to Colgate when they lost,
8-7, in extra innings on Friday (9 a.m.).
