WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Bryant University baseball team lost a pair of games to Brown, 7-3 and 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Murray Stadium. The wins gave the Bears a 3-1 edge in the season series as the two squads will meet one more time, Thursday afternoon in Providence.

Game 1
Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) and Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) each had a pair of hits in game one of a doubleheader, but the Bulldogs fell, 7-3, to the Bears. Campbell had two more hits in game two, giving him four for the day and 243 for his career, ranking him second all-time at Bryant behind Jason Eldridge's 247.

After Brown scored a run in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0, Bryant (27-21) responded with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.) drove in both runs, stroking a two-run double to left center. Norton extended his hitting streak to five games, going six-for-15 with seven RBI in that stretch.

That would be the only lead the Bulldogs would hold in the contest, as Graham Tyler quickly responded with a game-tying single in the bottom of the second off of Bryant starter Chris Foundas (Needham, Mass.). Foundas went 4.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out five.

Brown took the lead in the bottom of the third on a Robert Papenhause double that put the home team on top, 3-2.

Vigurs brought the two teams even in the top of the fifth, extending his hitting streak to eight-straight with a single through the right side with one out to score Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) from third and tie the game at 3-3. Vigurs now has a team-best 63 RBI, which is the third most for a Bulldog in a single season. The junior was tied for eighth in the country in RBI entering this afternoon's games.

The Bears broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 7-3 advantage. Leading 4-3 with two down, Steve Daniels hit a two-run triple down the line in left off of reliever Nick Laude (Wells, Maine) to add some insurance for the home team. Ryan Zrenda added another run in the frame with an RBI double to give Brown the four-run advantage.

Matt Griswold (Berlin, Conn.) did a good job out of the bullpen, throwing one scoreless inning. Mark Gormley went the distance for the Bears, throwing all seven while allowing three runs on five hits and striking out nine.

Game 2
Tom Baker (West Brookfield, Mass.) got the start on the hill in game two, going four solid innings. Baker allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out one before giving way to Brian O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.), who went two shutout innings in relief.

Brown got on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring a run on a ground out by Matt Colantonio to put the Bears up 1-0. Baker was then able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the inning with two outs, getting a fly out to keep the deficit at one.

Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) quickly tied the game, hitting a leadoff home run to left field in the top of the second to knot the score at 1-1. The bomb was English's fourth of the season while giving him 32 RBI.

Vigurs and Norton each recorded hits in the contest, extending their hitting streaks to nine and six games respectively. Vigurs is hitting .467 during his hitting streak, getting 14 hits in 30 at-bats while driving in seven runs.

Brown's Nick Punal would drive in what would prove to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a two-out double that scored Colantonio to put the Bears up 2-1. Rob Wilcox helped the lead stand-up as he got the win in the mound, while Matt Kimball recorded the save by striking out three of the four batters he faced.

The Bulldogs will play their eighth game in the last six days when they travel to play Brown again on Thursday in the fifth and final game of the season series (4:00 p.m.).
