ALBANY, N.Y. - The Bryant University softball team fell in a
pair of pitcher's duels at Albany on Wednesday afternoon, losing
2-0 and 1-0 to the Great Danes. Bulldog starter Samantha
Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) was excellent in both contests,
giving up just three runs on eight hits in 12 innings over the two
games while striking out five.
Albany was able to scratch across one run in the bottom of the
first and another in the sixth to score the only two runs of the
contest. Meagan Butsch brought home the first run, scoring Kristine
Bill from third on a fielder's choice to put the Great Danes on
top, 1-0. Only one ball left the infield in the first inning on a
single by Andrianna Walraven to center field.
Coming off back-to-back complete game shutout performances
against UConn and Fairleigh Dickinson, Houseal allowed two runs on
just three hits while striking out four and going the distance for
the 27th time this season.
The Great Danes scored a run in the sixth without recording a
hit, as Butsch walked and eventually came around to score on a pair
of ground outs.
Two of the hits for the Bulldogs came off the bat of Ali
Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.), who had her seventh multi-hit
game of the year. Chouinard singled in the first and again in the
sixth, while Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, N.Y.) had the
other hit with a single in the fourth.
Bryant's best chance to score came in the sixth, putting runners
on second and third with one out. But, Marissa Powell was able to
get a strikeout and a ground out to escape the inning. Powell went
the distance to get her 16th win of the year, striking
out eight to get the shutout.
In game two, Albany scored just one run on five hits, but Powell
and Leah McIntosh were able to make that lead stand-up as they took
home a 1-0 win to complete the sweep. The one run came in the
bottom of the second inning, as Michelle Connors hit a one-out home
run to left field that would prove to be the difference in the
contest.
Houseal only allowed five Great Danes to get further than first
base in the contest, as she allowed just the one run on five hits
while striking out one in a complete game effort.
Dobmeier and Kim Leonard (Milford, Mass.) had
the two hits in the game for Bryant. Dobmeier singled and the
fourth and Leonard doubled in the fifth, as only four Bulldogs
reached base in the game.
The Bulldogs will play their final game of the season on
Saturday, as they celebrate senior day by hosting Sacred Heart at
the Bryant Softball Complex (12:00 p.m.).
