SMITHFIELD, R.I - Freshman Lindsay Martin (Methuen,
Mass.) went two-for-three with four RBI, including
slugging her first career home run as the Bryant softball team
defeated Quinnipiac, 6-1, in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday
afternoon. The Bulldogs fell in game two of the twin bill, 4-0. The
squad has now won three of its last four games, moving their record
to 8-23.
Martin's blast came with two outs in the second inning, sending
the offering from Bobcat starter Mina Duffy over the fence in right
field, giving Bryant a 2-0 lead at the time. Martin also had a
single in game two, pushing her hitting streak to a season-high
five games.
Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) got her
eighth win on the mound, throwing a complete game and only allowing
one run while striking out six. The sophomore set the single season
record for strikeouts in one season against Central Connecticut,
and now has 155 on the season.
The Bulldog defense came up big, helping Houseal get out of
bases loaded jams in the second and third innings. The Bobcats had
the bases full with one out in the second, but Regina Burdo
(Wayne, Pa.) cut down Emily Bellush at the plate for the
second out of the inning, and Houseal got the final out at home on
a grounder back to the mound. Burdo made some sparkling defensive
plays all day, including a diving catch on a line drive to get the
final out of the game.
Stephanie Mirando (North Haven, Conn.) provided
an insurance run in the third, shooting a clutch, two-out single
through the right side to score Lauren McCart (Vorhees,
N.J.) with the third run for the Bulldogs, taking a 3-0
lead after three. Mirando was one-for-two, bringing home two runs,
while McCart came up with her fourth double in the last three
games.
Bryant put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the
sixth, two scoring on a triple by Martin with one out, giving the
Bulldogs a 6-1 advantage. Mirando also brought home a run with a
sacrifice fly, plating Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo,
N.Y.) who had led off the inning with a triple of her own.
Houseal only allowed one hit over the final three innings to clinch
the third-straight Bryant victory.
The Bulldogs could not find an answer against Heather
Schwartzburg in game two, as the freshman pitcher threw a complete
game, three-hitter while striking out 12 batters to help the
Bobcats to the win.
Julie Sini brought in the first run of the game with a two-out
single in the top of the second inning to put the visitors up 1-0.
Quinnipiac then scored three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a
two-run, bases loaded double by Bellush that knocked Houseal out of
the game, pushing the Bobcat lead to 4-0.
Freshman Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.) did
a good job in relief, throwing 2.2 innings of shutout ball and only
surrendering two hits.
Mirando, Martin and Ashley Coon (Levittown,
Pa.) each had a hit in the contest. Coon extended her
hitting streak to three games with a double to center in the first,
as she was the only player to reach scoring position against
Schwartzburg.
The Bulldogs will be back at home on Tuesday, as they host the
University of Connecticut at 4 p.m.
