HIDALGO, BIRD PACE WOMEN'S TENNIS AT NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
OVER WEEKEND
RESULTS
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis
team closed out the fall season with an overall strong performance
at the 2010 New England Championships over the weekend, hosted by
Sacred Heart and Fairfield Universities.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was sophomore Claudia
Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador), who claimed the No. 1
singles bracket with a thrilling 6-0, 4-6 (10-7) victory over
Providence's Marisela Aviles in the finals. Hidalgo racked up upset
wins over Fairfield and Sacred Heart to reach the final stage.

Lucy Bird claimed the No. 2 singles bracket at the New
England
Championships over the weekend.

The Bulldogs also took home top honors in the second singles
flight as sophomore Lucy Bird (Hamilton,
New Zealand) used her volleying game as a benefit to knock
off Connecticut's Emily Herb, 6-3, 6-2, in the finals after picking
up wins over Merrimack and Sacred Heart.
Hidalgo and Bird put the finishing touch on their respective
outings by combining to claim first doubles with a 9-7 win over
UConn in the finals. The duo knocked off Hartford in the first
round before beating Providence's Aviles and Maria Clara Bernandez,
8-2, in the semifinals, avenging a loss from a dual-meet earlier in
the season.
Bryant continued to roll at No. 4 singles when freshman

Vickers (Montrose, Colo.) pulled upsets over Sacred
Heart's Delaney Downing, 6-0, 6-0, and UConn's Lauren Wilmarth,
6-4, 6-4, to win the entire flight.
Sophomore Irma
Rodriguez Lockwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) had a
strong showing at the tournament as well, reaching the finals of
flight six singles before falling to Lucy Nutting of UConn, 8-7,
6-3 (10-5).
At No. 3 singles, freshman Stephanie Smyers
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned wins over UConn and Merrimack
before bowing out to Fairfield to pick up a third place finish.
Bryant had a pair of players pick up first round victories at
No. 5 singles when Katharine
Francazio (Cranston, R.I.) and Valeria Couto
Cuervo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) defeated Hartford and
Providence, respectively, before falling in the semifinals.
In doubles action, the tandem of Smyers and Couto Cuervo earned
a third place finish at the second flight while Francazio and
Rodriguez finished fifth at the third flight.
