SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Tony DiCesare drove in a pair of runs
in a four-run seventh inning as Northeastern came from behind to
pick up a 7-4 win over Bryant University in non-conference baseball
action Saturday.
Northeastern (6-3) led 3-0 after five, but Bryant rallied back
with four runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead on the
Huskies.
Freshman Ryan Granat (Long Valley, N.J.) led
off the inning with a single to right and moved to second on a base
hit up the middle by leadoff hitter Kevin Brown
(Northborough, Mass.). The Bulldogs loaded the bases
when NU's Kevin Ferguson misplayed a fly ball to left by
Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.).
The error would prove costly as senior Jeff Vigurs
(South Windsor, Conn.) laced a triple to the fence in
right, clearing the bases and tying the game up at 3-3.
After Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) grounded
out, Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored Vigurs
from third for the go-ahead run with a single to left.
Bryant starter Joe Michaud (Milford, Conn.)
pitched very well through the first six innings, but after Jon
Laroux singled to lead off the seventh and Ryan Maguire flied out,
the Bulldogs went to the bullpen to try to preserve the lead.
However, Northeastern recorded three-straight base hits,
including one by Tony Compagnone just over the glove of shortstop
David Soltis (Plainville, Conn.), scoring LaRoux
to tie the game at 4-4. With Bulldog closer Mark
Andrews (Hillsborough, NJ) in the game, DiCesare lined a
single off the Bulldog lefty, scoring two. The Huskies would
hold add one more in the inning to hold on for the 7-4 win.
Vigurs had two hits on the day to lead the Bulldogs.
Michaud allowed eight hits in just his second start and finished
the day striking out five Huskies and walking just one. Andrew
Leethous got the win for Northeastern as the sophomore struck out
seven and didn't walk a batter in six innings of work.
Bryant and Northeastern will wrap up the three-game weekend
series Sunday in Brookline, Mass. starting at 1:30 pm.
