BRYANT MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO BROWN, 4-0 IN SEASON
OPENER
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Taylor Gorman scored a pair of
goals for Brown and Austin Mandel registered two assists as the
Bryant University men's soccer team fell to the Bears, 4-0 on
Friday afternoon at Bryant's Sutton Field. Played amidst
fluctuating rain conditions as a result of a brewing Hurricane
Earl, the game marked the season opener for both teams as well as
the opening round of the Ocean State Soccer Classic.
Senior Jon Okafor opened the scoring in the 16th
minute after a series of passes by Mandel and Dylan Remick gave him
enough space in front of the net to put one past Bulldog keeper
Victor
Tutino (Deer Park, N.Y.).
Despite the slippery playing conditions, Tutino kept the
Bulldogs in the game for the remainder of the first half by staving
off a flurry of Brown scoring opportunities.
The best chance for the Bulldogs came a few minutes after the
break when senior Jordan Martin
(Bristol, Conn.) launched a shot from the top of the box
that nearly slipped under the arms of Bear keeper Paul Grandstrand.
Martin was able to connect for a total of three shots in the
contest but could not find the back of the net.
Junior Sean Ross gave Brown a 2-0 advantage on a timely pass
from Thomas McNamara in the 49th minute to open the
scoring in the second half. Brown then benefited from a second
yellow card given to Bulldog defender Norbert Guery
(Andover, Mass.) which gave the Bears a one-man advantage
for the remaining 25 minutes of the match.
Gorman's pair of goals came three minutes apart from one
another, starting with a strong finish off a corner kick by Mandel
and then on an unassisted free kick.
For the game, Tutino recorded four saves while Grandstrand
stopped two. Brown led the way in terms of shots by a 16-6
advantage.
The Bryant men's soccer team will return to action on Monday,
Sept 6 when the play Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation
game of the Ocean State Soccer Classic at Brown University.
