Eagles soar past Bulldogs, 75-55

Box Score
Altit scores career-high 14, Bulldogs fall to Boston College, 75-55, Sunday on road

BOSTON – Despite a career-high 14 points from newcomer Ben Altit (Herzeliya, Israel) and just a two-point halftime deficit, the Bryant University men's basketball team dropped a 75-55 non-conference game at Boston College Sunday afternoon, as the Bulldogs fall to 1-10 on the season.

Junior point guard Frankie Dobbs (Berea, Ohio) added a team-best 15 points while sophomore Alex Francis (Harlem, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 to lead the Bulldogs, who have little time to recover with the team's quick turnaround time for a game at the University of Arizona this Thursday (Dec. 22, 5 p.m. MST).

Altit, a 6-foot-10 freshman, was 6-for-11 shooting from the floor including a pair of 3-pointers in 28 minutes of action, surpassing his previous high of 10 points scored at Quinnipiac earlier this month.

Sunday's game was a tale of two halves, as the Bulldogs closed out the opening frame with an 11-2 run to head to the locker room trailing by only two, 34-32. But Boston College erased any thoughts of an upset by outscoring the Black and Gold, 41-23, in the second to improve to 4-7 on the season.

With both teams returning to action for the first time in a week, it was the Bulldogs showing some rust early on the offensive end.  Despite getting good looks at the basket with crisp passing around the perimeter, the Bulldogs missed their first four shots and were only 2-for-10 from the field out of the gate.

The Eagles took advantage of Bryant's cold shooting and raced out to an 18-4 lead with Lonnie Jackson finding the groove from long range early and the Eagles capitalizing on several second-chance opportunities.

But just as they did a week ago in a strong outing against Providence College, the Bulldogs finally awoke with 10:53 to go before the halftime break, as Corey Maynard (Adelaide, Australia) drilled home a pair of 3-point field goals to bring the Bulldogs within 10 points, 21-11.

Later, two free throws from BC's Ryan Anderson put the Eagles up, 27-13, forcing Bryant coach Tim O'Shea to burn his second timeout of the half, hoping to slow the Eagles down.  The strategy worked, as the Bulldogs regrouped with a nice 8-2 spurt keyed by a Francis layup and reverse basket in the paint from Dobbs to trim the Eagles' lead down to 29-17.

The Bulldogs didn't stop there, as the visitors continued to pour it on, closing out the half with an 11-2 run to make it a two-point game at the intermission.

However, BC didn't allow the game to stay close for long, storming out of the locker room to score the first 10 points of the frame and push the host's lead back to double digits, 44-32, and the Eagles would cruise to the final whistle from there.

The Bulldogs did a good job of containing BC's top two scorers with Patrick Heckman battling foul trouble and Matt Humphrey scoring just three points on 1-of-11 shooting from the field, but it didn't matter for BC, as Jackson was there to take over the bulk of the scoring duties. The freshman scored a career-high 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, including a sizzling 7-for-11 from behind the arc.

On the day, Bryant shot just 37.5 percent from the floor to BC's 47.5 percent clip, and the Eagles won the battle on the glass, 38-30. Ryan Anderson's 12 points and game-high 12 rebounds marked the only double-double of the outing, while Francis and Maynard paced the Bulldogs with eight boards apiece.
