SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team opened the 2011 fall season at the Doubles Festival at Fairfield University, led by sophomore May Vickers (Montrose Colo.) and freshman Devlin-Ann Amendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) who reached the flight three final.
The pairing of Vickers and Amendola started off the day strong by defeating Rhode Island's Michelle Dussol and Karolina Wojack, 8-0, and Fairfield's Nikki Jackson and Radde, 8-6. In their third match of the round robin tournament, Vickers and Amendola defeated Hartford's Christie Greenberg and Emily Willhoft, 8-6, to move on to the semifinals of flight three and beat Connecticut's Marie Gargiuolo and Lauren Wilmarth, 8-4. The Bryant duo's only loss of the day came in the finals to Quinnipiac's Rachel Cantor and Arianna Launie, 8-2.
Juniors Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) started off their flight one match with a win over Connecticut's Jennifer Learmonth and Mexene Weinberg, 8-4. Losses to Fairfield and Providence College set the pair up for the seventh-place match, where the Bulldogs defeated Sacred Heart's Delaney Downing and Kate Donnelly, 8-4.
The second flight duo, consisting of sophomores Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) and Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.), won its first match of the day by defeating Hartford's Haley Gileau and Ashley Harel, 8-5. After losing the next two matches of the round robin, they ended the day in fifth place by defeating Sacred Heart's Gabi Kaldan and Kristina Chao, 8-2.
Bryant continues the fall season on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when it travels to Kingston, R.I. for a non-league match against the University of Rhode Island. Match time is set for 3:00 p.m.
