THE PARTICULARS
The Bulldogs look to keep their winning streak alive as they return home to the Chace Athletic Center to host Army Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The contest is the second half of a men's/women's doubleheader and can be seen live on NECFrontRow.com.
THE SERIES
For the third-straight game in 2012-13, Bryant has never defeated Saturday's opponent in the Black Knights of Army. This is the sixth meeting between the programs, who have matched up in each of the Bulldogs' four previous Division I seasons and first met back on Feb. 19, 1979. The Bulldogs are winless in two tries against Army at the Chace Athletic Center, and the Black Knights just edged out the Bulldogs in last year's tilt, 69-65.
SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Ella Ellis leads the Black Knights and is averaging an impressive 19.8 points per game, complimented by 4.2 boards per outing and a team-leading eight blocks. Kyle Wilson puts up 13.4 per contest and is shooting at a 51 percent clip from the floor with a 46.7 percent mark from long range, while Josh Herbeck rounds out Army's double-figure scorers, averaging 10.2 points per game. Dylan Cox has a squad-high 14 assists and is converting at a 64.3 percent clip in limited shot opportunities while tying the side high with 21 rebounds (4.2 rpg). As a team, the Black Knights are shooting 43.6 percent and enter Smithfield off a double-overtime loss to Yale, 86-83, Nov. 24.
LAST TIME AGAINST ARMY
Despite a 36-31 halftime lead, Bryant couldn't keep Army in check from beyond the arc in the teams' last meeting, with the Black Knights topping the Bulldogs, 69-65, in the waning seconds at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y. on Nov. 22, 2011. The Black Knights converted 15 of their 36 attempts from 3-point land and went 14-for-18 from the line despite being outrebounded by the visiting Bulldogs, 43-30 on the contest. Corey Maynard scored a then-career-high 21 points while Alex Francis chipped in 20 more with a career-best 14 boards to lead the Black and Gold, who shot 41.4 percent from the field with seven 3-pointers of their own. Josh Herbeck paced Army with 21 points, while Julian Simmons and Ella Ellis added 19 and 17, respectively.
BRYANT vs. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE
Bryant enters Saturday's matchup 0-7 against current Patriot League members in its short Division I history and is winless in eight tries against the conference all-time. Five of those contests have come against Army, with two more coming against Lehigh and the final meeting coming on neutral ground against Bucknell in 2009-10. Saturday's game marks the first of three Patriot League matchups for the Bulldogs not only this year, but this month, as Bryant will take on Navy Dec. 10 and Lehigh Dec. 29, both on the road.UP NEXTThe Bulldogs remain in Smithfield, R.I., for their second of three-straight home contests Wednesday, Dec. 5, as Bryant tries to go 2-0 against the Ivy League in 2012-13 with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Yale at the Chace Athletic Center. Wednesday's game can be heard live on WOON 1240AM and seen at NECFrontRow.com.
WHAT ELSE THE BIGGEST VICTORY IN PROGRAM HISTORY MEANS FOR THE BULLDOGS
With the Sunday's 56-54 victory over Boston College, Bryant is now 1-5 against ACC opponents, including a 1-4 mark against Boston College. The win represents the program's first-ever victory over a BCS opponent, and gives the team its first winning streak since the 2010-11 season when the Bulldogs won four in a row from January 8-20. The win also moves Bryant above .500 for the first time in the program's Division I history.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
The Bulldogs have earned the program's first-ever win over its last two opponents in Brown (Nov. 21) and Boston College (Nov. 25). Bryant hopes to keep that streak, as well as its winning streak, alive, as it has never topped Army entering Saturday's bout, either.
STARKS NAMED NORTHEAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore transfer Dyami Starks was awarded the program's first-ever Northeast Conference Player of the Week accolade Monday after averaging 21.0 points per game and guiding Bryant to a 2-0 week. The guard, who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, opened the week with a career-high 25 points in a 68-61 win at Brown, shooting 8-of-16 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe before putting on a show for the Conte Forum faithful Sunday afternoon at Boston College, scoring all 17 of his points in the second half (7-11) to give the Bulldogs their first win over a BCS opponent. On the week, he shot 45.5% from the field and 87.5% from the free throw line, also knocking down six triples on the week.
LEAPS AND REBOUNDS
Just two games and eight days after scoring his 1000th-career point, junior forward Alex Francis pulled down his 500th-career rebound Sunday afternoon in a 56-54 stunner over Boston College. The New York native joined the elite club off a team-high eight-board performance against the Eagles. He enters Saturday's game with 1,027 points and 504 rebounds to his name.
NICE NOVEMBER
The Bulldogs finished out the month of November above .500 with Sunday's win Sunday over Boston College, posting a 3-2 record over the stretch. It is the first time Bryant has posted a winning record in a single month of play since January of 2011, when they went 5-4.
FUN WITH NUMBERS
There is a trend beginning to emerge when Bryant puts a stroke in the win column. This season, the Bulldogs are 3-0 when scoring first, when they hold opponents below 70 points and when they have taken more shots than their challengers. Also interesting to note: the Bulldogs have yet to win an opening tip in 2012-13.
START ME UP
Despite adding the most depth the team has had in its short Division I tenure, the Bulldogs are still relying heavily on their starters in 2012-13. In Bryant's three wins this season, the five-man starting ranks of sophomore Dyami Starks, juniors Corey Maynard and Alex Francis and seniors Vlad Kondratyev and Frankie Dobbs have accounted for 183 of Bryant's 200 points, or 91.5 percent of the team's scoring. On the year as a whole, starters are responsible for 87.5 percent of all points scored (265 of the team's 303 points on the year).
