Bulldogs shut out Manhattan, 7-0
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Bryant University women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 sweep against Manhattan on Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site match played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The Bulldogs improve to 11-5 on the season by virtue of the win and 4-1 in matches played on a netural court, while the Jaspers fall to 5-11 on the year.
Bryant wasted little time en route to taking an early advantage by sweeping all three doubles tilts. In the No. 1 flight, Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) held on for an 8-6 win over Lilli Johnson and Brianna Turano.
The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point as freshmen Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Garden City, N.Y.) posted an 8-4 victory over Hilary Valenzuela and Caitlin Bricketto in the No. 2 flight. Bryant made it a clean sweep as sophomore Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Irma Rodriguez Lockwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) picked up an 8-1 win in the #3 match.
Ahead by a point heading to singles, Hidalgo squared off against Johnson in the #1 flight where the former prevailed by a 6-4; 6-3 score to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. Sophomore May Vickers (Montrose, Colo.) added to the lead with a 6-3; 6-3 victory in the #4 flight over Turano, while Smyers took down Stephanie Tsao, 6-1, 6-4, in the #5 match to clinch the victory for the Bulldogs.
Bryant rounded out the afternoon with wins at #2, #3 and #6. Ammendola downed Valenzuela, 6-1; 6-0 in the No. 2 flight while Brandao cruised by Bricketto by a 6-0; 6-0 margin. Bird rounded out the group with a similar 6-0; 6-0 shutout at No. 6 to secure the sweep.
The Bulldogs close the books on the 2011-12 season on Sunday (April 15), traveling to Stony Brook for a match set for 12 p.m.
