The Bryant University women's basketball team heads to New Haven, Conn. for a showdown with Ivy League foe Yale on Wednesday in Game 1 of a doubleheader with the men's team. Tip is set for 5 p.m.
SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday will mark the fourth all-time meeting between Bryant and Yale with the Ivy Leaguers holding a slim, 2-1, advantage over the Black and Gold.
Last January, Naana Ankoma-Mensa put up 22 points and 13 rebounds and Tiersa Winder poured in a career-high 13 points in a 78-65 loss to Yale. Yale shot over 43 percent from the field, while Bryant shot just under 37 percent for the game. The Black and Gold won the rebounding battle, 50-39, but turned the ball over 25 times, including 19 giveaways in the first half alone.
SCOUTING YALE
Yale enters Wednesday's action with a 3-4 overall mark , coming off a tough 66-61 loss at Furman on Wednesday, Nov. 27. After getting off to a 3-1 start, the Connecticut Bulldogs have dropped their last three decisions, including a pair of 20+ losses at Fordham and Miami.
Junior guard and reigning Ivy League Co-Player of the Week Sarah Halejian leads her team with 14.3 points per game to go along with 3.3 assists per game and 3.9 rebounds per game. Senior guard Janna Grag ranks second on the team in scoring with 8.7 ppg, while sophomore forward Meredith Boardman averages 7.9 ppg and a team-best 7.9 rpg. Yale has 10 players than have seen action in all seven games this season and nine players than average at least 10 minutes per contest (no one averages more than 29 minutes per game).
DROPPIN' DIMES
Senior point guard Jenniqua Bailey is currently averaging 5.1 assists per game, ranking her first in the Northeast Conference (63rd in the country). Over the last four games, Bailey has dished out 25 assists (6.25 apg), including a career-high eight helpers vs. New Hampshire on Dec. 1.
FLAME THROWERS
The Bulldogs currently rank first in the Northeast Conference in both field goal percentage (.426) and 3-point field goal percentage (.413), and second in free throw percentage (.720). The Bulldogs .413 clip from deep is also good for 11th best in the country. Senior guard Stephanie Cardamone also ranks first in the NEC in 3-point FG percetnage, entering Wednesday's contest boasting a .583 percentage (7-of-12) from deep (tied for fourth in the country).
LOGGING MAJOR MINUTES
Through five games this year, four Bryant starters are averaging 30+ minutes per contest, with only seven Bulldogs logging more than 10 minutes a game. Naana Ankoma-Mensa (33.3), Courtney Schissler (34.4), Meredith Soper (31.6) and Jenniqua Bailey (31.8) currently all rank in the top 16 in minutes played in the Northeast Conference (no other team has more than three in the top 20).
FOR THE RECORD
Both senior Naana Ankoma-Mensa and graduate student Meredith Soper are both within reach of becoming the 21st and 22nd 1,000 point scorers in Bryant women's basketball program history, respectively. As mentioned early, Ankoma-Mensa needs just 53 points and 136 rebounds to become the third member of the Bryant women's hoops 1,000-point/1,000-rebound club (Liz Davies, Karyn Marshall), while Soper currently sits at 767 career points.
