SMITHFIELD, R.I. – In its first action of spring break, the Bryant University women's tennis team fell to East Carolina State University, 7-0, Monday afternoon in Puerto Rico.
Despite the lopsided loss, the Bulldogs put up a valiant fight, almost stealing the doubles point to the Conference USA foe. In doubles action, the tandem of junior Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and freshman Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) remained unbeaten on the year as a team, topping Dana Grey and Marie Storozheva, 8-5, at the no. 1 spot. At no. 2 doubles, freshmen Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.) and Briana Leonard (Westford, Mass.) came out strong, but eventually dropped the tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5), to Michelle Castro and Emily Groeneveld.
In singles action, Bouillin began to get into a groove in set number two until getting broken at 4-4, eventually dropping the no. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-4, to the senior Melis Tanik. Brown also put up a strong showing to a more experienced opponent, falling to Groeneveld, 6-4, 6-4.
Leonard and classmate Jenna LaBarre (Smithfield, R.I.) also pushed their opponents to the limit in their second sets at no. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, nearly bringing their matches to a tiebreaking third set.
"It was a long match considering the score," said head coach Barbara Cilli. "A good first outdoor match in 100 degree heat on the courts, unfortunately, it didn't swing our way."
Bryant will have an opportunity to pick up its first Northeast Conference win of the season when it takes on LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday.
