Bulldogs mount huge comeback Sunday vs. Seton Hall in Florida finale

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After finding themselves down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bryant University softball mounted one of its best comebacks in Division I history, scoring seven runs in the fifth and sixth inning to secure a 7-5 victory over Seton Hall in the USF Spring Break Tournament finale, Sunday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla.

In what was seemingly a tale of two games, Seton Hall's Jen Metzger took a no hitter and five-run lead into the bottom of the fifth inning with all the momentum on her side. However, a pair of huge innings for the Bulldogs propelled them to their seventh overall victory and a 4-1 mark at the USF Tourney this weekend.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Hayley Bottino (Canyon Country, Calif.) got thing started with an infield single to break up Metzger's no hitter. The next two batters, Haylee Haas (Moorpark, Calif.) and Amy Weinberg (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), earned back-to-back walks to load the bases for Bryant. Two batters later, freshman Taylor Burger (Killingworth, Conn.) continued her clutch play with a pinch-hit, two-run single to cut the Pirates lead down to three, 5-2.

After a Kendall Corder (Carmichael, Calif.) walk, classmate Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) scored Weinberg on a fielder's choice, cutting the deficit two just two runs.

After holding Seton Hall scoreless in the top of the sixth, Bryant exploded for four two-out runs in the bottom of the inning to make the improbable comeback. With one out, it was Bottino and Haas who got things going for the Black and Gold once again, setting up Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.) for a huge pinch-hit, two-run double to knot the score, 5-5. Two batters later, Corder laced a RBI single, scoring Guy, to give Bryant the one-run lead. Mable and junior Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) drew back-to-back walks, scoring an insurance run on the latter to take the 7-5 edge heading into the seventh.

In the top of the seventh inning, sophomore Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) took care of the rest to earn her team-leading fifth victory of the season. After overcoming multiple errors and allowing five runs in the first four innings, Madsen shut down the Pirates in the latter part of the contest to give Bryant its fourth win in five games.

The Bulldogs will now head back east with an in-state showdown at Rhode Island looming on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.), before heading to New Haven, Conn., for the Yale Invitational over the weekend.
