Bulldogs in second after setting two relay records on day one of MAACs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's swimming and diving team opened up the 2016 MAAC Championships with a bang, setting a pair of school records and grabbing a pair of medals on Wednesday evening at Erie Community College.

The Bulldogs are tied for second with 66 points after day one of the meet. Rider leads the way after winning both relay events.

The Black and Gold opened the championships up with a record-setting performance in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.), classmate Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam), senior Joshua Bjornberg (Wallingford, Conn.) and sophomore Benon Boyadjian (Middlebury, Conn.) teamed up to take home the silver medal in the event with a time of 1:30.17.

In the 800 free relay, Bryant grabbed a bronze medal as the quartet of Schulte, freshman Charlie Broe (New Windsor, N.Y.), junior Kyle Koziol (Farmington, Conn.) and Curtin finished with a time of 6:46.30. The time broke a three-year old school record that had been set at the MAAC Championships in 2013.

The championships will continue at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday with the preliminary heats of the 500 free.
