Bulldogs couldn't erase Eagles' lead after the first, fall, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After falling behind, 2-0, in the first inning, the Bryant University softball team, despite placing two runners on base in the fifth and sixth respectively, were unable to mount a comeback, dropping the contest, 2-0, to Boston College, Wednesday afternoon at Conaty Park.

In the bottom of the first with runners on second and third, Eagles' (18-12) shortstop Jessie Daulton grounded out to Bryant's shortstop, Rachel Monroe (Southwick, Mass.), allowing Megan Cooley to score and Loren DiEmmanuele to advance to third to give BC the 1-0 advantage. The next batter, Tatiana Cortez hit a sacrifice fly to Monroe, plating DiEmmanuele on the play for the Eagles' 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Trailing in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs (1-21) started to break down the Eagles' defense, recording their first hit of the game. With one out, junior Taylor Burger (Killingworth, Conn.) took first after being hit by Allyson Frei's pitch. Burger advanced to second off sophomore Maritza Martinez's (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) single to third. Runners stayed at first and second, as Monroe reached first on fielder's choice, as BC's third baseman tagged Burger out on her way to third. Frie's strong showing on the mound helped the Eagles out of the inning, as she struck out sophomore Robyn Ukegawa (Carlsbad, Calif.) swinging, while leaving the Bulldogs' tying run on first.

The top of the sixth saw another game-tying opportunity for Bryant, as the Black and Gold left runners on second and third. With one out at the top of the slate, junior Haylee Haas (Moorpark, Calif.) reached first before taking second off a throwing error by the Eagles' second baseman. Senior Liana Ogata (Tustin, Calif.) singled to move Haas to third, before classmate Mollie Anderson (East Greenwich, R.I.) came in to pinch run for Ogata. Anderson proceeded to steal second on the next play, but the BC defense rose to the occasion, holding the Bulldogs scoreless through the sixth.

Frei ended the game in the top of the seventh, after striking out Bryant's last two batters swinging, helping the Eagles to the 2-0 victory. The sophomore recorded 11 strikeouts on the game, helping to secure the win on the mound in her seven innings. Senior Hayley Bottino (Canyon Country, Calif.) pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing two runs off four hits, while striking out four Eagles. Freshman Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) came in to pitch the final 1.1 innings, letting up only one hit.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, March 30, as they travel to Connecticut for the doubleheader against the Huskies at 2 and 4 p.m.
