Schulte, Sullivan highlight day three of MAACs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) picked up his second individual gold medal and the Bryant University men's swimming and diving team set two school records on day three of the 2017 MAAC Swim & Dive Championships.

The Bulldogs have 329.5 points after three days of competition and sit in fourth place. Rider is in first with 585.5 points, Marist has 437 and Canisius has 336.

A day after winning his third-straight gold in the 200 IM, Schulte took home his third-straight gold medal in the 100 breast. He won the event with a time of 54.49, which is good enough for an NCAA 'B' cut. Schulte has now won two individual gold medals and has helped Bryant to a relay gold on day one.

Junior Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Oliver French (Nashua, N.H.) set school records on day three of the championships. Curtin finished second in the 100 back with a time of 49.47, while French was fifth in the 1000 free with a time of 9:32.45.

Bryant had a strong showing in the 1000 free, 100 fly, 100 breast and the 100 back on Friday. Robert Davis (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished seventh and Charlie Broe (New Windsor, N.Y.) finished 16th in the 1000 free, while Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) finished third and George Sommerville (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished 16th in the 100 breast.

Cyrus Nabavi (Murray, Kent.), Benon Boyadjian (Middlebury, Conn.) and Ben Steen (Portsmouth, R.I.) finished 12th, 13th and 16th in the 100 back, and Nabavi, Boris Paraliticci (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Boyadjian finished 14-16 in the 100 fly.

The Bulldogs also received a 15th-place finish from Shane Vyskocil (Parsippany, N.J.) in the 400 IM and a 13th-place finish from Davis in the 200 free.

Bryant's historic day was capped by Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) in the 3 meter dive. Sullivan became the first diver in program history to advance to the 'A' final, finishing fifth with a score of 263.40.

The Black and Gold also earned a silver medal in the 400 medley relay, finishing less than a second off the winner. Curtin, Boyle, Boyadjian and Schulte teamed up to post a time of 3:20.95.
