Bulldogs get back on track with 7-0 win over Fairfield

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team got back on track Sunday evening, earning a dominant 7-0 victory over Fairfield.

The victory is the Bulldogs' first in three tries against the Stags. Bryant won three three-set matches to highlight what was an exciting match.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles)

  • No. 1 – Fairfield's Emily Lombardi and Sarah Stuhlmann won a thrilling match over the senior duo of Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) and Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico), 7-6 (8-6).
  • No. 2 – Bryant's other senior duo of Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England) earned Bryant's first point at doubles, defeating Anna Komer and Jessica Pil, 6-1.
  • No. 3 – Freshman Arianna Oropeza (Weston, Fla.) and Gabrielle Bergeron (Quebec, Canada) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Gabriella Campos and Diana Prinos.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles)

  • No. 1 – Campfield dropped her first set against Stuhlmann but rallied to win 6-1 in the second and 6-0 in the third.
  • No. 2 – Sjoberg wrapped up Bryant's dominant performance with a three-set victory over Prinos. She won the first set, 6-4, lost the second set, 6-4, and then won the third set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (6-4).
  • No. 3 – Luiggi clinched the match for the Bulldogs, winning in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-4.
  • No. 4 – Arroyo made it 3-0 in favor of the Black and Gold with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Komer.
  • No. 5 – Oropeza was the first to win in singles as she cruised past Pil, 6-0, 6-2.
  • No. 6 – Bergeron capped a perfect day with a three-set victory over Courtney Connors, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

NOTES

  • Oropeza improved her dual match record to 4-1 on the year.
  • Bergeron is now a perfect 3-0 in dual matches this season, including a 2-0 record at No. 6.
