Bryant clubs seven home runs in Tuesday win over Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – Carmine Petosa and Lewis Barnum each hit a pair of home runs and the Bryant University baseball team hit seven overall as it closed non-conference play with a 20-8 victory over Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve 26-20 overall and finish 6-2 in midweek games. Tuesday's game was shortened to eight innings.

Petosa clubbed a pair of solo home runs and now has three in his last two games and eight overall. Barnum posted his first-career multi-home run game and has five on the year. Petosa (3-4, 2HR, 2RBI, 3R), Barnum (2-6, 2HR, 4RBI), Jake Gustin (4-6, 2 2B, 5RBI, 2R), Zac Zyons (3-5, 2B, HR, 4RBI, 4R) and Matt Smith (2-4, HR, RBI, 2R) combined for 14 hits, 16 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Key Moments

  • Bryant was winning 9-7 in the sixth when Stonehill loaded the bases with no outs. Back-to-back defensive gems by John Hosmer at third base held the Skyhawks to one run.

How it Happened

  • Gustin gave Bryant an early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first.
  • The Skyhawks answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Bryant quickly recovered, scoring three runs in the top of the second. Zach DeMattio drove in the first run with a sac fly and Justin Hackett tied the game with a single to center. Zyons then doubled inside the first base bag to make it 4-3.
  • Stonehill would tie it once again, 4-4, in the bottom of the second.
  • Petosa gave Bryant back the lead with a solo home run to dead center in the third.
  • The Black and Gold then added four runs in the fourth. Gustin drove in a run with a double and Barnum made it 9-4 with a three-run home run to center field.
  • The Skyhawks then scored the next four runs to make it 9-8. In the sixth, they loaded the bases with no outs but Hosmer turned a 5-4-3 double play before making a nice play to his left to limit the damage to one run.
  • Zyons gave Bryant some breathing room, hitting a two-run home run to deep right in the seventh to make it 11-8.
  • The Bulldogs then put the game away with a nine-run eighth. Bryant hit back-to-back home runs twice in the inning. Petosa launched his second of the game to deep right before Matt Smith homered to right center. Zyons was then HBP with the bases loaded to score a run and Gustin cleared the bases with a three-run double. Derek Smith and Barnum closed the inning with back-to-back home runs.

  • Logan Frasier started and allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits over 4.0 innings. He didn't issue a walk and struck out six.

  • Bryant's seven home runs were its most in a game since it hit nine home runs at LIU Brooklyn on May 8, 2016. That was also the last time Bryant had five players hit a home run.
  • Gustin extended his on-base streak to 25 games.
  • Gustin's two doubles give him 50 for his career, the fourth-most in DI program history. He's one of only four players to have 50+ doubles.
  • Gustin also moved into fourth place with 240 career hits, moving past James Ciliento.
  • Gustin now has 182 career runs. He is six behind Nick Angelini (188) for the most in DI program history.
  • A game after his 13-game hitting streak came to a close, Zyons matched his season-high in hits (3) and runs scored (4) and drove in a season-high four runs.
  • Petosa has now homered three times in his last two games. He now has eight home runs on the season.
  • Barnum posted his first-career multi-homer game. He now has five on the year.
  • Derek Smith's home run was his 10th of the season, tying him with Nick Angelini and James Ciliento for the sixth-most in a single season in DI program history.
