Bryant downs Fairfield, 2-1, to open 2024

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Filou Verhoeven and Callie Caito each scored their first career goals as the Bryant field hockey team opened the 2024 season with a thrilling 2-1 win over Fairfield on Friday afternoon at Cowen Field.

With the win, the Bulldogs open the season with a victory for the second-straight year. Bryant has now won each of its last four games, all at home, dating back to last season.

Verhoeven scored on a penalty corner late in the first half and Caito converted a semi-breakaway to make it 2-0 before the Black and Gold were able to defend a late push from the Stags.

  • Caito raced off the bench and ran onto a long ball from the Bryant defense. Her first attempt was denied but Caito corralled the rebound and fired a reverse into the back of the cage.
  • Fairfield quickly answered, scoring on a deflection less than a minute later.

  • Bryant held off a furious Fairfield push to complete the win.
  • The Stags earned five penalty corners in the final four minutes but Bryant denied all of them.
