Bryant holds off Binghamton, takes Friday opener 7-6

VESTAL, N.Y. – Kyle Rizy and Toby Scheidt delivered 4.1 innings of one-run relief as the Bryant baseball held on for a 7-6 victory over Binghamton on Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.

The Bulldogs improve to 13-15-1 overall and 3-4 in the America East with the win. Bryant and Binghamton continue their series on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.

Bryant raced out to a 5-0 lead on Friday but had to hold off a Bearcats rally. Binghamton loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. The Bearcats scored one with a single but Shea Grady snared a line drive at first and stepped on the bag for a double play. A ground ball to second stranded the tying and winning runs on base. Rizy and Scheidt then retired six of the final seven batters to close it out.

Jacob Gaudreau led Bryant's 12-hit attack with three hits, while Zac Zyons (2-5, HR), Drew Wyers (2-3, RBI) and Gavin Greger (2-5, 2B, RBI) all had two hits. Pat D'Amico and Matt D'Amato each drove in a pair of runs.

Key Moments
  • Bryant scored four times in the first inning to grab the early lead.
  • Binghamton loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and trailed 7-6. Rizy pitched out of it, with a line drive double play and a soft ground out.
How it Happened
  • Bryant got off to a hot start as each of the first four batters reached and scored. Zyons got things started as he launched the first of the game deep to right center for a leadoff home run. Noriega walked, took second on an errant pickoff and scored as Wyers singled through the middle. A second walk put two on and Matt D'Amato advanced both with a sac bunt. Pat D'Amico followed with a sac fly and Gavin Greger hit a sinking liner to right that alluded a diving fielder for an RBI double to make it 4-0.
  • The Black and Gold extended their lead in the third as Durand opened the inning with a double and came around to score on a single to left from D'Amico.
  • Binghamton got on the board in the third thanks to the long ball. Bolton hit a leadoff solo home run to left and Devan Bade hit a hanging curveball over the left center wall to make it 5-3.
  • Bryant quickly answered, plating two runs in the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out but a pop out on the infield made it two outs. D'Amato then fell behind 0-2 before working the count even at 2-2. He then grounded on through the right side to plate two and make it 7-3.
  • The Bearcats cut into the lead in the fifth as they chased Michael Belcher with a two-out rally. Belcher retired the first two batters but a single, double and a walk loaded the bases. Mike Stellrecht then greeted Rizy with a two-run single to right field on the first pitch. Rizy bounced back to get a fly out to end the inning.
  • In the seventh, back-to-back singles opened the inning and Rizy misplayed a bunt to load the bases with no outs. Abraham then singled to right to score a run and make it 7-6. Stellrecht then hit a liner down the first base line that Grady caught and quickly stepped on first for the double play. Rizy then induced a slow ground ball to second to strand runners on second and third.
  • Rizy came back out in the eighth and retired the side before handing the ball to Scheidt in the ninth. Scheidt retired the first two in the ninth before allowing a single. He came back to get a strikeout to end the game.
