Bryant closes regular season with three-game set at UMBC

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant baseball team closes out the regular season in Baltimore as it opens a three-game series with UMBC on Thursday night. 

Bryant wrapped up the America East Regular Season Championship last weekend, while UMBC will be playing for its playoff lives. This weekend will be a rematch of last year's America East Championship.

  • Michael Belcher will headline the Bryant weekend rotation for the sixth-straight week. The right hander is 2-0 with a 4.37 ERA in 57.2 innings this year. He has walked 17 and struck out 54. Belcher ranks third in the league in ERA, third in oppBA (.237) and eighth in strikeouts. He allowed three runs on five hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out five in 7.0 innings last week.
  • Robbins has been consistent for the Black and Gold over his last six league starts. He has allowed one run or less in three of the six outings but has lasted 5.0 innings just once in that span. Robbins allowed three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out six in 4.0 innings last week vs NJIT.
  • Delongchamp had one of his best outings of the year last weekend, allowing one run on four hits over 4.0 innings. He walked one and struck out three. Delongchamp has struck out 36 in 38.1 innings of work.
  • UMBC has shifted star reliever Nick Remy into a starting role last week. He enters the weekend with a league-leading seven wins and a 2.95 ERA in 39.2 innings. Remy has allowed just 28 hits, has walked just nine and has posted 39 strikeouts. Last weekend, he allowed three runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. Last year vs Bryant, Remy made three relief appearances, allowing three runs on three hits (two home runs).
  • Sargent enters the weekend 1-2 with a 5.33 ERA in 50.2 innings. He has struck out 47. Sargent faced Bryant three times last year, allowing nine runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. He pitched twice against the Bulldogs in the America East Tournament. 
  • Brady Fox is one of the league's top freshman arms, posting a 1-4 record and an 8.74 ERA in 35.0 innings. Fox had his best outing since March last weekend, striking out seven and allowing three runs over 5.1 innings at UAlbany.

Bryant vs. UMBC

  • This weekend is a rematch of the 2024 America East Baseball Championship. The Bulldogs are 8-3 in 11 all-time meetings.
  • Last year, Bryant swept the Retrievers at Conaty Park before UMBC earned a series victory in Baltimore on the final weekend of the season. 
  • Seeded first and second in the tournament, Bryant and UMBC met in the winner's bracket final, with the Bulldogs earning a 4-1 victory. 
  • Bryant then earned a 15-10 victory in the championship round. 
Bryant-NJIT Recap
  • Bryant clinched its second-straight America East Regular Season Championship over the weekend, taking two-of-three from NJIT at Conaty Park.
  • The Bulldogs won a wild affair on Friday morning, 10-9. NJIT broke a 3-3 tie with six runs in the top of the ninth but the Bulldogs stormed back and walked it off with seven runs in the bottom of the ninth. Charlie Saul won it with a walk-off, three-run triple.
  • On Saturday, NJIT built a 6-1 lead only to see the Black and Gold tie the game with a four-run seventh. Cole Campbell, however, broke the tie with an eighth-inning triple and NJIT held on for a 7-6 win.
  • Bryant secured its fifth-straight America East series victory with a 9-4 win on Sunday. Zac Zyons homered twice and Luke Delongchamp and Jackson Vanekso combined to limite the Highlanders to just two runs over 8.0 innings. 

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant is 30-17-1 overall and 15-6 in America East play following a midweek win over Stonehill. The Bulldogs are 19-3 since the beginning of April..
  • The Bulldogs are hitting .299 with a league-best 35 home runs in America East play. On the mound, Bryant sports a 5.35 ERA which ranks third. 
  • Drew Wyers has reached safely in 30-straight games and enters the weekend ranked first in the AE in average (.421), first in slugging (.727), first in OBP (.525) and first in OPS (1.252). He is second in the league with 45 RBI and is coming off a four-hit, four-RBI performance against Stonehill.
  • Gavin Noriega enters the weekend leading the league lead in RBI with 47 and is second with 50 runs scored. He is also tied for second in the league with 16 doubles. 
  • Zac Zyons ransk fifth in the league in OPS (1.049) and has reached safely in each of his last 24 games. He is hitting an even .300 with seven home runs in America East play.
  • Matt D'Amato has also reached safely in 24 consecutive games and leads the Bulldogs with 25 walks on the year. He is one of five players with 20+ walks. 
  • Kyle Rizy and Jackson Vanesko are a combined 8-0 in league play this year. Rizy is 4-0 with a 3.32 ERA in seven appearances (21.2 innings), while Vanesko is also 4-0 with a 2.04 ERA in five appearances (17.2 innings). Vanesko has allowed just one run on three hits over 8.0 innings in his last two outings. 
  • Landon White surrendered three runs last weekend vs NJIT but has still struck out 20 batters in just 9.2 innings of league play.

Scouting the Retrievers

  • UMBC is 18-24 overall and 8-13 in league play. The Retrievers are currently in last place, a game out of a playoff spot.
  • UMBC is hitting .278 and has a 7.31 ERA in league play.
  • 2023 America East Rookie of the Year Leewood Molessa has returned from injury this year and has seven home runs and 27 RBI in league play.
  • Danny Wyatt is hitting .328 with 14 RBI, while Anthony Mascuilli leads the team with a .368 average and a 1.021 OPS. He has a .521 OBP in AE play.
  • Emmett Tolis has thrown 16.1 innings of relief in league play. He has a 6.61 ERA. Tolis has worked more than two innings in every league outing.
