A longtime noted artist and sports cartoonist with the Providence Journal - Bulletin for 45 years, Lanning's illustrations of mascots of college and professional teams were widely circulated nationwide. His best-known drawing was an illustration of John F. Kennedy that was published the day after the president was assasinated that sold more than 65,000 copies.  He served as the President of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame and was a valued member of the community with his many contributions to Rhode Island life in general and youth organizations.
