Softball Splits Pair with AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 8, 2006)

- Kellie Brown (Gill, Mass.) belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give American International College a 4-3 win in the nightcap of a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader with Bryant University at Yellow Jackets Field on Saturday.  The Bulldogs, who took a 5-0 win in the first game, are now 8-12 and 7-3 in NE-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets are 6-16 and 3-1 in the league.

Trailing 3-0 entering the sixth inning after a two-run home run by Jordan Dargon (Trumbull, Conn.) in the fourth and a solo shot by Victoria Duane (West Haven, Conn.) in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets, who did not have a baserunner until Brittany Provost's (Delanson, N.Y.) two-out single in the fifth, got on the board in the sixth when Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) scored on a single by Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.).  Brown, the next batter, launched a home run to right-center that scored Zanetti and Kayla Donnelly (Pittsfield, Mass.), who had also reached on a single.

Ashley Deegan (Madison, Conn.) came on in the sixth to relieve starter Megan Nickerson (Greenfield, Mass.) and picked up the win in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.  She recorded the first two outs in the seventh before getting injured on a line drive, with Nickerson recording the final out to pick up the save.  Jennifer Bernier (Rehoboth, Mass.) took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing five hits in six innings of work.

In the first game, Bryant scored five runs in the final two innings to take down the victory.  Amanda Gagne (Wilbraham, Mass.) hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth for a 2-0 lead, then the Bulldogs would score three more times in the final frame.  Janine Enos (Wareham, Mass.) allowed four hits en route to the shutout for Bryant, while Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) allowed five hits in six innings and faced one batter in the seventrh before giving way to Marisa Markiewicz (Southwick, Mass.) who hurled the final inning in relief.
