BULLDOGS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO COLONIALS
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Two late goals by Keara Mehlert (Chevy Chase,
MD) and Misa Eiritz (New Orleans, LA) lifted George Washington
University (1-2-0) past Bryant (1-3-0), 3-2, Sunday afternoon. The
loss was the third in a row for the Bulldogs, who held a, 2-1, lead
going into the final minute of play. The Colonials were able to tie
the match in the 89th minute when Erica Wright (Cabin
John, MD) found Mehlert who hit a volleyed shot from the top of the
box that hit the crossbar and dropped into the net making the
score, 2-2. Just 41 seconds later, Wright made another great pass.
This time it was Eiritz who was on the receiving end hitting a shot
from the left side past Bryant keeper Jessica Clark (Barnstable,
MA) capping off an amazing comeback by the Colonials, handing the
Bulldogs a heartbreaking, 3-2, loss.
Bryant jumped out to a very early lead on the 2nd
goal of the season by Alex DiPippo (Shelton, CT) just 35 seconds
into the game. DiPippo was able to beat the Colonial keeper with a
shot from the top of the box that found the left side netting,
making the score, 1-0. George Washington tied the game in the
27th minute when Eiritz crossed the ball into the box to
junior Dara Rosen (Rockville, MD) who scored from the left side,
ending the first half with the sides even at, 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 73rd minute when
junior forward Holly Tyser (Somers, CT) punched the ball into the
net following a scramble in the box, lifting the Bulldogs to a,
2-1, advantage. The goal was Tyser's first of the season, but the
Bulldogs could not hang on in the final minute, giving the
Colonials their first win of 2008 in dramatic fashion.
Bryant will have over a week in between games. They will look to
bounce back Wednesday, September 10th at UMass-Amherst
(4 p.m.).
