BULLDOGS GET FIRST WIN OF SEASON IN HOME OPENER, 3-2, OVER MANSFIELD

Boxscore

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University field hockey team earned its first win of the 2008 season in its home opener Monday afternoon, getting a trio of goals - two from newcomers - to top Mansfield University, 3-2, at the Bryant Turf Complex.

The Mountaineers (2-1) got on the board first, getting a goal from Laura Carden 15:14 into the first half. But sophomore Julie Kuchyt (Hatfield, Mass.) evened the score in the 30th minute with an unassisted goal, scoring Bryant's first goal of the season.

Freshman Courtney Landi (Kingston, N.Y.) gave the Bulldogs (1-2) their first lead of the year less than 10 minutes into the second half, when she connected with fellow rookie Alexandra Czerniak (Holyoke, Mass.) for the 2-1 advantage in front of the home crowd.

The Bulldogs thought they had made it 3-1 with 3:24 left in the game, when Kuchyt fought through to the goal and seemingly netting another for the home side. But just seconds after the goal was called back, sophomore transfer Elise Boissoneau (Ashburnham, Mass.) netted the eventual gamewinner for her first, also unassisted, of the year.

Mansfield's Rebekah Brown got a pass across the goal from Carden to close Bryant's lead to 3-2 in the waning minutes, but it wouldn't be enough as the Bulldogs held on to complete their first 2008 victory.

Bryant outshot the Mountaineers, 15-12, in the matchup, getting four saves from junior goalkeeper Kundayi Mawema (Harare, Zimbabwe). Mansfield goalkeeper Brianna DeLuca recorded six saves.

Mansfield was led by six shots off the stick of Shana Markwis, while nine Bulldogs combined  for their 15 shots, four recording multi-shot games.

After three games in four days, the Bulldogs will now get a chance to catch their breath, as they take five days off before hitting the road again. Bryant will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday, Sept. 6 to take on Lehigh University. Game time is 11 a.m.
