SOFTBALL DEFEATS UCONN 1-0 TUESDAY AS COON COMES UP WITH
WINNING RBI

STORRS, CT - Junior Ashley Coon's (Levittown,
PA) first-inning RBI single produced the only run the game
but it would be all the Bulldogs would need as the Bryant softball
team picked up a 1-0 win over the University of Connecticut Tuesday
afternoon.
Pitcher Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, PA) went
the distance in earning her 11th win of the season, holding the
Huskies scoreless on just six hits. It was her 24th complete game
of the year and 21st career win.
With one out in the first, Lindsay Martin (Methuen,
MA) drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a
passed ball. Coon squared off with Husky pitcher Jessie
Stavola with a tough at-bat before finally winning the battle by
blooping a single over Julianne Towers' head at second bases to
plate Martin in what proved to be the game-winner.
"It was a great at-bat by Ashley at the plate, fighting off
several pitches before coming up with a big single to score
Lindsay," said coach Lisa-Ann Wallace.
"After that, Sami (Houseal) made the run hold up by pitching
another great game."
Alli Chouinard (Swansea, MA) and
Stephanie Mirando (North Haven, CT) accounted for
Bryant's only other hits in the game, but the Bulldogs helped
Houseal out with excellent defense to earn the victory.
Houseal walked just two batters while fanning three in the
win. For Coon, it was her 13th RBI of the season.
Bryant (11-28) will travel to Albany Wednesday afternoon for a
rescheduled doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
