WOMEN'S SOCCER EARNS THRILLING OVERTIME VICTORY OVER
SAINT PETER'S, 2-1
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Senior forward Holly Tyser (Somers,
Conn.) scored the game-winning goal just 46 seconds into
the first overtime period for the Bryant University women's soccer
team as they defeated Saint Peter's 2-1 tonight at the Bryant Turf
Complex.
The Bulldogs (2-4) looked sharp from the opening horn. Right
from the beginning the team's passes were on target, ball control
was in their favor and the shots were plentiful. The Bulldogs
outshot their opponents, the Peahens (2-5), by a margin of 24-10.
It was the most shots the Bulldogs have taken this season.
In the 42nd minute Bryant freshman Krista Johnstone
(Dover, N.H.) was able to get a good shot off that Peahen
goalie Caitlin Hoffer was able to sprawl and deflect right into the
waiting left foot of Bulldog forward Morgan Derick
(Ashland, Mass.) for the first goal of the night.
The Bulldogs held the one-goal lead strong through most of the
second half until the 84th minute when a penalty kick was called
for a handball in the box. The penalty came off a Peahen corner
kick. Peahen sophomore Courtney Sundstrom placed the ball at the
12-yard marker and poked the ball into the back of the net to tie
the game at 1-1 with just six minutes to play.
Just 46 seconds into the first overtime period Tyser found
herself in the right place at the right time after a deflection and
drilled the ball into the goal. The Bulldogs improved to 2-4 with
the win.
11 Bulldogs had shots on goal in the contest while senior
goalkeeper Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.) had
seven saves.
The women's soccer team returns to action in just two days when
they host NJIT at 1 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
