CAREER-HIGH 17 SAVES, CAN'T KEEP BULLDOGS FROM FALLING IN
FINAL ROAD BOUT OF THE SEASON, 13-3, TO MOUNT ST.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant
University women's lacrosse team saw goals from its top three
scorers in sophomore Lauren Sheridan (Bethpage,
N.Y.), junior Meg Atha (Valley Cottage,
N.Y.) and senior captain Alli Faiola (Billerica,
Mass.), but couldn't put together enough offensive
output to top Northeast Conference opponent Mount St. Mary's,
falling to the home side, 13-3, in the final road contest of the
2010 season.
The Mount (6-7, 4-3 NEC) never trailed in the Sunday afternoon
affair, but after the home side opened up a two-goal lead, Atha
would cut the score in half, 2-1, with 25:56 still to play in the
first session. The goal – Atha's 18th of the year
– came off a pass from senior Eliza DeMarseilles
(Branford, Conn.), who had the only assist of the outing
for the Bulldogs (2-12, 2-5).
A trio of Mountaineer tallies followed to run the score to 5-1,
when Sheridan connected on a free position shot with 18:13 still
remaining on the opening frame clock for the second of just three
Bryant scores on the day.
Six-consecutive goals spanning both frames – three of them
coming from Ashley Johnson, who would finish the day with four
tallies – vaulted Mount St. Mary's to an 11-2
advantage, a deficit the Bulldogs couldn't make up with 15:10
left to play.
Faiola scored a free position goal with 8:14 remaining to move
the score to 11-3, but that would mark the end of scoring for the
Black and Gold, who would surrender two more tallies before the
clock ran out.
Sophomore goalie Lauren Filippone (West Babylon,
N.Y.) matched a career high with her 17-save performance,
facing 38 Mountaineer shots on the day, 30 of them on goal.
Johnson's nine shots were a game best while Sheridan let go
six to pace the Bulldogs, who were outshot, 38-17, on the day.
Bryant picked up 24 ground balls to Mount St. Mary's 28,
and was led by seven from Filippone, who, along with DeMarseilles,
also caused a trio of turnovers. Mount St. Mary's Jackie
Kearney collected a game-high nine ground balls and forced a
contest-best six turnovers to lead the home team, adding to her
pair of goals in the game. She was one of seven Mountaineer scorers
and nine who recorded points for the home team on the day.
Bryant returns home for its final two matchups of the 2010
season and will start the season-ending stretch on Friday, April 16
against Robert Morris (4 p.m.). The Bulldogs will then wrap up the
year and celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, April 18 against Saint
Francis (PA) at 1 p.m.
