Bulldogs head to Dartmouth Wednesday

FIELD HOCKEY LOOKS TO AVENGE 2011 LOSS TO BIG GREEN ON WEDNESDAY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Coming off a convincing 2-0 victory over Brown in its home opener on Friday, the Bryant University field hockey team will head to Dartmouth College on Wednesday for a showdown with the Big Green. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs (2-5) snapped their five-game losing streak Friday night with two second-half goals to earn their second victory of 2012. Dartmouth (1-4) enters the contest on a four-game skid, dropping their last four games, including two against nationally ranked opponents.

On Friday night in Smithfield, the Black and Gold held a strong Brown team scoreless through the first 35 minutes, in large part thanks to an impressive performance by junior goalkeeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) who recorded seven saves in the half (eight for the game).

The Bulldogs finally broke through on their 11th penalty corner of the game at the 50:22 mark when Kayleigh Ballantyne (Gorham, Maine) fed classmate Olivia Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) who drove the ball through a crowd to the near post to give Bryant the 1-0 lead.

The Black and Gold would add another score just over three minutes later when Mallory Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) found the ball in a scramble inside the circle and fired a pass to Abigail Armstrong (Mahopac, N.Y.) for her first marker of the season.

The Big Green enters the contest after playing tough against two ranked opponents in their last two games. Dartmouth fell, 6-0, to #3 Maryland on Sept. 9 and, 4-1, to #2 Princeton this past Saturday. Senior Lisa Masini leads her team with seven points on three goals and one assist through five games.

The Bulldogs will look to avenge a 5-2 loss to the Big Green from last September when they head to Hanover, N.H., again on Wednesday. Last year, Dartmouth sophomore Ali Savage registered three scores en route to her first career hat trick. Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Ballantyne recorded the goals for Bryant.
