BULLDOGS HEAD TO MAINE FOR WEEKEND GAMES AGAINST RUTGERS AND MAINE

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team will head to Orono, Maine for games against Rutgers on Saturday (12 p.m.) and the University of Maine on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs (1-3) will look to get back in the win column after coming off a difficult three-game California road trip over Labor Day weekend. The Scarlet Knights (2-2) and the Black Bears (1-4) are also searching for W's after both dropping their last contests as well.

During Labor Day weekend play in California, sophomore Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs, her third of the season, in the 2-1 loss to Pacific Friday night. Junior Kayleigh Ballantyne (Gorham, Maine) picked up her third assist of the year as well.

On Saturday, the Black and Gold fell short in a 3-1 loss to UC Davis. Freshman Michelle Fallon (Pompton Plains, N.J.) tallied her first career goal in the game off a helper from senior Elise Driscoll (Harwich, Mass.).

In the final contest of the road trip the Bulldogs ran into a nationally ranked California squad which sat at 22nd in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Poll entering the game. Paced by a hat trick from sophomore Lara Kruggel, the Golden Bears earned their second victory of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) made a total of 20 saves in the three games, including 10 stops against UC Davis.

Looking forward to weekend play, the Bulldogs open with Rutgers on Saturday at noon. The Scarlet Knights are 2-2 on the season with both of their losses coming in overtime. Last time out, Rutgers dropped an overtime contest against Temple, 3-2. Seniors Carlie Rouh and Cornelia Duffin and junior Lisa Patrone lead the team with two goals each through four games.

On Sunday, the Black and Gold will do battle with a Maine team coming off back to back losses over Labor Day weekend. Two one-goal loses against Central Michigan and Michigan in their last two games leave the Black Bears with a 1-4 record, however, they began the season ranked 22nd in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll.

The Scarlet Knights and the Black Bears will play Friday afternoon before facing off with the Bulldogs on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
