Box Score DESPITE NINE SHOTS ON GOAL, FIELD HOCKEY COMES UP SHORT
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team dropped its first of two games in Orono, Maine, this weekend to Rutgers, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Despite nine shots on goal, the Bulldogs (1-4) were unable to find the back of the net for the second straight contest. The Scarlet Knights improve to 3-3 on the year led by a three-point effort from junior Lisa Patrone.
Rutgers got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first twelve minutes of play. Patrone got things started by finding Christie Lonsky in front of the Bulldog net, giving the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 advantage.
Just under six minutes later, Patrone put back a richocet to beat Bryant goal keeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine), doubling the Rutgers advantage to 2-0.
Despite outshooting their opponent in the first half, 7-6, the Bulldogs were unable to tally a score.
The lone goal of the second half came at the 42:28 mark from Rutgers' Sophie Wright, her second of the year.
Junior Olivia Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) had three good looks at the net, but was unable to put away a goal. Corinne Woods (Beverly, Mass.), Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand), Mallory Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) and Michelle Fallon (Pompton Plains, N.J.) all had shots on goal, as well.
The Black and Gold played fairly even with the Scarlet Knights in every statistical category, only attempting one less shot (13-12 Rutgers) and three less penalty corners (13-10 Rutgers) in the contest.
Rutgers' goalkeeper Sarah Stuby had a game-high eight saves, while Hancock finished with six saves.
Bryant will look to get back in the win column on Sunday when they face off with a talented Maine team at 1 p.m.
