Six-straight; Bird's late tally lifts FH

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite dominating the game from the outset, the Bryant University field hockey team needed a goal in the 65th minute from junior Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) to slip past Missouri State, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.

With their sixth-straight victory, the Bulldogs (6-1) have tied the 2002 squad for the best seven-game start to a season in program history. The Bears (1-6) dropped their fifth-straight game.

Bryant never allowed Missouri State into the game, out-shooting the Bears 10-5 in the game while not allowing a single shot on cage. The Bulldogs put five shots on net and it was their final one that finally separated the two teams. After the Black and Gold earned a penalty corner, senior Olivia Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) settled the ball and found Bird wide open in front for her eighth goal of the season.

Senior Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) was not forced to make a single save in earning her first shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs travel to Hanover, N.H., on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to face Dartmouth. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
