Bulldogs fall to Furman, 4-1, in Chanticleer Challenge finale

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team wrapped up action at the Chanitcleer Challenge with a tough 4-1 loss to Furman, Monday morning in Conway, S.C.

The Bulldogs (2-8) close out the first tournament of their spring break trip with a 1-4 showing on the weekend. On Monday vs. the Paladins, Furman's Lauren Collier allowed just one run in seven strong innings to go along with six strikeouts.

The Paladins struck first in the top of the third when a Sieara Bishop triple score Natalie Clemmons to put Furman up 1-0 through three. In the bottom of the fourth, senior outfielder Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.) scored the tying run on an Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) sacrifice fly to right center fielding, knotting the score, 1-1.

Furman went on to add a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a Taylor Colloins two-run jack, before adding on one more for good measure in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) struck out a season-high seven while allowing four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Madsen also went 1-for-3 from the dish en route to an All-Tournament Team selection (lone Bryant representative).

Junior outfielder Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.), sophomore Hayley Bottino (Canyon Country, Calif.) and Guy all notched hits for the Black and Gold in the loss.

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will head to College of Charleston on Tuesday for a doubleheader set for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
