Late three lifts Brown past Bryant on Friday night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Kino Lilly Jr.'s three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left was the difference as Brown defeated the Bryant men's basketball team, 76-75, in a thriller Friday night at the Chace Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 5-5 overall on the year. Bryant is back home on Sunday (Dec. 8) to host VTSU-Johnson at 2:00 p.m.

On Friday, Bryant and Brown traded the lead 24 times and the largest lead of the night for either team was six. The Bulldogs held a 75-73 lead with 7.4 seconds left but a big screen allowed Lilly some space and his three rolled around the rim and in to give the Bears the victory. It was the final three of his game-high 23 points.

Bryant was led by Rafael Pinzon's 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Earl Timberlake added 19 points and six boards and Barry Evans posted 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

  • Lilly's three rolled around the rim and then fell in off the glass with 2.2 seconds left to give Brown the lead.
How it Happened
  • Evans was activated early for the Black and Gold, scoring the first seven Bryant points. He gave Bryant a 7-5 lead with a three from in front of the Brown bench.
  • The teams would trade the lead between medias, with Mitchell knocking down a wing three to make it 14-13.
  • Brown would build a 26-20 lead before Bryant answered with the next seven points. Pinzon started the run with a floater and Timberlake gave Bryant a 27-26 lead with a pair of free throws.
  • The Bulldogs run would extend to 20-10 and give Bryant a 40-36 lead at the break.
  • Connor Withers helped keep the run ignited as he finished a beautiful baseline move at the rim and then drilled his only three of the half from the wing.
  • Paint buckets from Pinzon, Withers and Mitchell gave Bryant a 38-32 lead.
  • The Bears made it a four-point game at the break as Lilly finished at the rim with three seconds left.
  • Brown knotted the game up at 40-40 in the first minutes of the second half before Pinzon hit back-to-back threes to give Bryant the lead.
  • The Bears rallied back to take the lead as Lilly hit a three from the wing and then knocked down two technical free throws to give the Bears a 49-48 lead with 14:44 left.
  • Brown and Bryant would then trade leads, with the Bears taking a 59-58 lead on a heavy one-handed throw down from Aaron Cooley with 9:51 left.
  • Evans had Bryant's answer, cutting down the lane for a pair of Chace-rocking slams to give Bryant a 66-61 lead.
  • A three from Lilly would give Brown a 68-66 lead with 5:16 to play and the teams traded free throws and the Bears led 70-68 with 3:02 to play.
  • Withers then battled for an offensive rebound and was able to knock down two free throws to tie it.
  • Timberlake then finished twice at the rim to give Bryant a 74-70 lead.
  • Lilly would hit a tough jumper from the foul line but his driving attempt to tie the game with 38 seconds left was blocked by Mitchell.
  • Bryant, however, turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds, giving the Bears another chance.
  • The Bears were fouled with one second on the shot clock and Landon Lewis hit 1-of-2 to make it 74-73 with 17.7 seconds left.
  • Mitchell then hit 1-of-2 on the other end for Bryant, giving Bryant a 75-73 lead with 7.6 seconds left.
  • Lilly was able to get the inbounds and his shot appeared to roll out but it caromed back off the glass and in for a three-point field goal and a 76-75 lead for Brown.
  • Bryant's last effort came on a full court heave from Robinson that was caught by Evans. Evans' shot fell off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

  • Bryant finished the game 29-of-57 (50.9 percent) from the field, 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from three and 12-of-20 (60.0 percent) from the line.
  • Brown held a slim 32-30 advantage on the glass. The Bears also finished the game 29-of-49 from the field. Brown made 57.7 percent of its shots in the second half.
  • Pinzon led Bryant with 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting. He was 2-of-3 from three and also contributed three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Timberlake collected 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He had six rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
  • Evans was 6-of-9 from the field and finished with 15 points. He added eight boards and three assists.
