VESTAL, N.Y. – The top-seeded Bryant Baseball team scored five times in the bottom of the eighth and tournament Most Outstanding Player
Carmine Petosa homered twice and drove in five runs as the Bulldogs won their first America East Baseball Championship with a 15-10 victory over second-seeded UMBC on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 36-19 overall and earn the league's automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Regionals. Bryant will learn where it will play on Monday, May 27 during the NCAA Selection Show that airs live on ESPN2 at 12:00 p.m.
Petosa clubbed a two-run home run to ignite Bryant's offense in the first, added an RBI single in the second and hit a crucial two-run home run in the fourth. He finished the tournament 8-of-14 with three doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored.
Jackson Phinney added a crucial three-run home run in the eighth, while
Justin Hackett (3-4, 2B, 2R),
Gavin Noriega (3-4, HR, 4R) and
Matt Smith (3-5, RBI, R) all added three hits.
Bryant's pitching staff never allowed the Retrievers to take the lead on Saturday as six pitchers combined in the victory.
Landon White earned the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while
Mark Scamardella recorded the final three outs.

Key Moments
- Bryant scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to break a 10-10 tie. Chris Einemann broke the tie with a safety squeeze, Smith singled home a run and Phinney capped the inning with a three-run shot.
How it Happened
- The Bulldogs and Retrievers opened the game trading two-run home runs. Petosa started it off with a towering two-run shot to right center in the bottom of the first.
- UMBC first baseman Luke Trythall answered with a two-run shot in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2.
- Bryant used a two-out rally to plate three runs and take a 5-2 lead in the second. Luke Johnson retired the first two batters of the inning before Hackett started a string of five-straight hits with a double off the top of the wall in center. Zyons followed with an RBI single through the right side to score Hackett. After a Noriega single sent Zyons to third, Einemann laced a 1-2 pitch into left for an RBI single. Petosa capped the string with an rope to right for an RBI single and a 5-2 Bryant lead.
- In the third, Phinney was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sac bunt and took third on a fly out to center. Phinney then broke for home in a 1-2 count and slid in safely with a steal of home.
- UMBC took advantage of a Bryant error to rally in the fourth. The error came with one out and a two-out walk extended the inning for Dawson Baracani who sprayed one down the right field line that alluded a sliding Matt Smith for a two-run double. Taylor then greeted reliever Sean Zaslaw with an RBI double to left center to make it 6-5.
- Bryant had a quick answer as Petosa launched a two-run home run over the Bryant bullpen to make it 8-5.
- The Retrievers looked to rally in the top of the fifth but the Bryant defense answered the call. Einemann and Zyons spun a 6-4-3 double play for the first two outs. After three walks loaded the bases, Zyons fielded a slow ground ball and then dove to touch the second base bag for the third out.
- Bryant tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to hustle from Durand. The Bulldog DH hustled down the line on a routine ground ball to third and was ruled safe at first. Hackett followed with a double to left center and Durand raced around the bases to make it 9-5.
- The Retrievers used the long ball to make it a one-run game, 9-8, in the sixth. Matt Ryan hit a two-run home run and Danny Wyatt hit a solo shot.
- Bryant got a run back as Noriega clobbered a 3-1 pitch to center field for a solo shot in the sixth.
- UMBC once again rallied in the seventh, scoring two to tie the game. A ground ball to no mans land with two outs extended the inning for UMBC. A walk loaded the bases and a pair of RBI singles tied the score. Landon White ended the inning with a strikeout to keep it tied.
- The Black and Gold delivered the decisive blow with a five-run eighth. Hackett opened the inning with a sharp single up the middle and Zyons worked a full-count walk to put the first two on. Einemann then laid down a perfect safety squeeze to bring home Hackett from third and give Bryant the lead. UMBC then intentionally walked Petosa and Smith laced an RBI single to center to score Zyons. Phinney then launched a an opposite-field three-run home run off the scoreboard in right center to make it 15-10.
- In the top of the ninth, Scamardella induced a game-ending 6-3 double play to set off a wild celebration on the pitchers mound.

- Bryant won its fourth tournament championship and its first since 2016. It also marks Bryant's first America East Championships.
- Bryant was playing in the championship round for the eighth time in program history and is now 4-4.
- The Black and Gold have also made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013, 2014 and 2016.
- The Bulldogs are now 35-12 in their last 47 after starting the season 1-7.
