Bulldogs fall in first game of Saturday's DH, 3-2

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – NJIT came out on top of a pitcher's duel in game one of Saturday's America East doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium, grabbing a 3-2 victory over the Bryant baseball team on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 29-15 overall and 14-3 in America East play. Bryant is now 28-8 in its last 36 games and lost for the first time in five tries on the road in league play. The Bulldogs are now 10-4 in one-run games.

Bryant's Luke Delongchamp and NJIT's Holden deJong locked horns on Saturday with each picking up nine strikeouts. Delongchamp held NJIT hitless until Albert Choi tied the game with a two-run home run off the foul pole in the sixth inning. He allowed just the one hit, walked one and struck out nine.

deJong was brilliant for NJIT, holding Bryant to just two run on four hits in a complete-game effort. He walked three and struck out nine.

Gavin Noriega drove in both of Bryant's runs with a two-run double in the third. Carmine Petosa reached twice to extend his on-base streak to all 44 games this year and 47 dating back to last year.

  • Albert Choi tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was NJIT's only hit off of Delongchamp.

How it Happened

  • Bryant got on the board with two runs in the third. Einemann was hit by a pitch and Zyons followed with a double off the wall in right center. Noriega then laced a pitch over the head of the shortstop and into left center for a two-run double.
  • Delongchamp allowed his first baserunners in the fourth as NJIT put two on with a hit by pitch and an infield error. The righty bounced back from a 3-1 count to strikeout Luke Longo to end the inning.
  • In the fifth, another hit batter gave the Highlanders a runner. Bryant then picked then threw behind the runner at first but he slid safely into second. After a ground out, Delongchamp's eighth strikeout of the afternoon stranded the runner at third.
  • In the sixth, a catcher's interference call gave NJIT a runner. Albert Choi then sliced a 2-2 pitch off the left field foul pole for NJIT's first hit and a game-tying two-run home run.
  • NJIT then won it in the seventh. Kevin Putsky reached out and poked a leadoff double down the left field line. An intentional walk and a sac bunt put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. A slow ground ball to first was fielded by Petosa but his throw to the plate was late as NJIT won on a walk-off.
