Bulldogs fall in 11 innings in game two Saturday

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – NJIT completed a doubleheader sweep of the Bryant baseball team with a 9-8 walk-off victory in game two on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 29-16 overall and 14-4 in America East play. Saturday marked the first time Bryant has lost a weekend series in America East play. The Bulldogs dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh.

Bryant built a 5-0 lead on Saturday night and then rallied back from 6-5 down with back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh. NJIT, however, tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a home run, again in the bottom of the 10th and walked off with a bases-loaded walk in the 11th.

Zac Zyons (3-6), Daniel Baruch (2-5, HR, 2R, 2RBI), Carmine Petosa (2-6, 2B, HR, 3RBI), Matt Smith (2-5), Justin Hackett (2-5) and Chris Einemann (3-6, 2RBI) all had multiple hits for Bryant. Petosa has now reached safely in all 45 games this year and 48 straight dating back to last season.

Bryant used eight pitchers in the contest. Landon White and Ryan Bradley delivered 3.2 innings of scoreless relief before the Highlanders rallied against the league's leader in saves, Zach Nichols.

  • The Highlanders tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and the bottom of the 10th before winning on a bases-loaded walk in the 11th.

How it Happened

  • Bryant opened the scoring with a five-run second inning. Matt Smith singled and Justin Hackett doubled to start the inning, and Einemann brought home both with a single up the middle. A long delay followed as the NJIT starter left with an injury. Daniel Baruch then made it 3-0 with a two-out single through the left side. Petosa capped the inning with a two-run opposite field double to left center, putting Bryant up 5-0.
  • NJIT answered with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the second.
  • The Highlanders made it 5-3 with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. A dropped fly then put runners on second and third with one out. LeVangie buckled down and got a strikeout and a fielded a comebacker to end the rally.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Burrows battled back to strikeout Sallie and Jackson Phinney threw out Dillon Can at second to end the inning.
  • NJIT took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. An RBI single to center and a wild pitch tied the game at 5-5. The Highlanders then took a 6-5 lead on a sac fly. Landon White got a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
  • Bryant was able to retake the lead with back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh. Baruch stepped to the plate and crushed a towering solo shot to left center to tie it. Petosa then fell behind 0-2 before lashing a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall to give Bryant the lead.
  • NJIT tied the game in the bottom of the ninth as Luke Longo hit a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall.
  • In the top of the 10th, Greger walked and Einemann singled to put the first two runners on. Zyons then laid down a perfect bunt and the throw to first went into right field, allowing a urn to score. NJIT would intentionally walk Noriega to load the bases with no outs and the Highlander reliever got two strikeouts and a pop out to strand the bases loaded.
  • NJIT would tie the game on a double in the bottom of the 10th and nearly won the game as Ortiz hit a drive to left center. Gavin Greger tracked it down and made a diving catch to send the game to the 11th.
  • In the bottom of the 11th, a hit by pitch and two walks loaded the bases and a third walk brought home the winning run.

  • Bryant is now 14-4 in league play. This weekend marked Bryant's first series loss in America East play.
  • Petosa extended his on-base streak to 45 games this season and 48 dating back to last season with his two-run double in the second. It is the second longest on-base streak in program history. Robby Rinn reached in 50 straight during the 2016 season.
  • Petosa has now walked 38 times this season.
  • Petosa's home run was his second of the weekend, 10th of the season and the 24th of his career. He is now alone in second place in DI program history for career home runs.
  • Zyons extended his on-base streak to 25 games.
  • Greger now has hits in 10 of his last 11 games.
  • LeVangie matched his career high with five strikeouts.
  • Bradley has now tossed 5.1 scoreless over his last four outings.
  • Baruch homered for the third time this week and now has eight on the year.
