Bryant visits URI (Tues), hosts Northeastern (Wed) this week

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant baseball team opens a busy five-game week with a pair of midweek contests. Bryant will head to Kingston to face in-state rival Rhode Island on Tuesday before hosting regional rival Northeastern on Wednesday at Conaty Park.

Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., while Wednesday will be a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.

Bryant vs. URI

  • Bryant owns a 16-10-1 lead in the all-time series with URI. The Bulldogs won both games vs the Rams last year and have won seven of the last eight.
  • Last season, Matt Smith erased a 7-3 deficit with a seventh-inning grand slam at Conaty Park. Carmine Petosa then homered in the eighth as Bryant won 8-7.
  • In Kingston, Bryant trailed 6-0 after three, 7-6 after five and 9-7 in the sixth before rallying for a 13-9 victory. Bryant used a four-run eighth to pull away. 

Bryant vs Northeastern

  • Bryant holds a 10-7 lead in the all-time series with Northeastern. The Huskies, however, have won five of the last six meetings.
  • That includes a 5-4 walk-off victory last season in Brookline. Zac Zyons provided Bryant's offense in the game with a first-inning grand slam.

  • Bryant is 5-7-1 on the year. The Bulldogs dropped two-of-three at Dayton over the weekend, winning the series finale, 7-4.
  • The Bulldogs are hitting .248 as a team with 27 doubles and 13 home runs. Bryant's pitching staff has a 5.14 ERA and has struck out 110 in 105.0 innings.
  • Brandyn Durand leads the team with a .373 average, five doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI. 
  • Gavin Noriega had a big week for the Black and Gold, driving in 10 runs over the four games. He's now hitting .314 with six doubles, 14 RBI and a .407 OBP.

  • URI enters the week at 7-8 overall following a weekend sweep of Eastern Kentucky.

Scouting the Huskies

  • Northeastern is 8-5 on the year and fresh off a four-game sweep of San Diego State. 
  • The Huskies hit .258 as a team with 18 home runs and 37 stolen bases. The pitching staff owns a 3.94 ERA.
