Baseball visits Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant baseball team hits the road for the rest of April as it begins a five-game road trip with a Wednesday afternoon trip to regional rival Sacred Heart. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.

Bryant will follow with a weekend series at UAlbany before wrapping up the month of April at Stonehill (Apr. 30).

  • Last week, Trey Deitelbaum tossed 3.0 scoreless innings vs URI in his second start of the year. 
  • In addition to Deitelbaum, Mark Scamardella and Alex Slotter have started on the midweek. 
  • Bryant has pitched to a 3.94 ERA in midweek contests this season.

Bryant vs. Sacred Heart

  • Bryant and Sacred Heart quickly built a rivalry when the Bulldogs joined the Northeast Conference in 2009. 
  • The Bulldogs and Pioneers met 51 times from 2009-2022, with the Bulldogs going 34-17.
  • Bryant and SHU met in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 NEC Championship Round, with the Black and Gold winning in 2013 and 2014. 
  • Bryant earned a 10-4 victory on March 25 at Conaty Park and have won each of the last seven games. It is the longest winning streak for either team in the series.
  • In March, Brandyn Durand broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run home run in the sixth. He would finish the game with five RBI.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant is 18-16-1 overall after a series victory over UMass Lowell last weekend.
  • The Bulldogs have hit 84 doubles this year, including a DI single-game program record 10 on Saturday vs UML. Bryant now ranks 38th nationally in total doubles and 14th in doubles per game (2.40). 
  • Bryant is 5-2 in midweek games this year and is hitting .274 with a 3.94 staff ERA. Bryant pitchers have limited opponents to a .215 average (51 hits in 64.0 innings). 
  • Brandyn Durand is hitting .414 in midweek contests, going 12-for-29 with 13 RBI. Gavin Noriega leads Bryant with 15 RBI in midweek contests.
  • On the year, Noriega ranks second in the America East with 37 RBI. He is on pace for the third 40-RBI season of his career. 
  • Drew Wyers enters the week first in the America East in average (.405), OBP (.520) and OPS (1.236). He is 30-for-74 with eight doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI. He also walked 10 times and been hit 12 times. Wyers has a 17-game on-base streak.

Scouting the Pioneers

  • Sacred Heart is 18-20 overall on the year. They are 11-10 in their first year in the MAAC. SHU was swept by Rider over the weekend.
  • In midweek games, the Pioneers are 3-5. They have earned wins over URI, FDU and UMass.
  • SHU hits .264 with 74 doubles and 32 home runs, while it pitches to a 5.90 ERA. 
  • Bryan Matuschat started the first game between the two teams, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings. He has allowed 10 runs over his only two outings since.
  • Gavin Donohue (.335, 10 2B, 6 HR, 31 RBI), Alex Ungar (.331, 7 HR, 29 RBI), Dante D'Amore (.317, 13 2B, 30 RBI) and Peter Link (7 2B, 4 HR, 32 RBI) pace the SHU offense.
