D'Amico's eighth-inning homer lifts Bryant to 7-4 win at UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Pat D'Amico broke a 4-4 tie with a three-run home run in the eighth inning as the Bryant baseball team earned a 7-4 victory over UAlbany in the series opener between the two teams on Friday afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs improve to 20-16-1 overall and 8-5 in America East play with their ninth win in 10 games. Bryant and UAlbany are scheduled to continue their series on Saturday but weather could alter the schedule.
 
Bryant took a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning on Friday but the Great Danes were able to tie the game with a four-run fifth. It remained tied until the eighth. Gavin Noriega doubled to open the inning, Drew Wyers singled to right and D'Amico hit a towering three-run home run to dead center.
 
D'Amico finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Zac Zyons also homered for the Bulldogs. Noriega (2-5, 2B), Wyers (2-4) and Charlie Saul (2-3, 2RBI) all finished with multiple hits.
 
Kyle Rizy earned his fifth win of the year as he tossed 4.1 scoreless innings of relief. He retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced.

How it Happened
  • Bryant jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. In the third, Matt D'Amato reached on an error to start the inning and Zyons made it 2-0 with a two-out two-run home run to right field.
  • In the fourth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs. Dylan Banner was able to retire the next two but Saul singled through the left side to plate a pair.
  • Bryant starter Michael Belcher was cruising through the first four innings and had two outs and a runner on second in the fifth when UAlbany rallied. Down 1-2 in the count, Filippi walked and then Stephens was hit by a pitch to load the bases. McAllister followed by hitting a breaking ball into the left field corner for a three-run double. Toby greeted Rizy with a single to left to tie the game at 4-4.
  • In the eighth, Noriega doubled into the right field corner to get things started and Wyers followed with a single through the right side. D'Amico then lifted a high fly ball to dead center that carried over the wall for a three-run home run.
  • Rizy, meanwhile, retired the next seven in a row after the Toby single in the fifth before a leadoff single opened the eighth. He induced a 6-4-3 double play and then set down the final four batters to close it out.
