Bryant completes sweep of Maine with 9-2 win on Sunday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Charlie Saul, Gavin Noriega and Drew Wyers combined to drive in seven runs as the Bryant baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Maine with a 9-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Conaty Park.
 
The Bulldogs improve to 26-16-1 overall and 13-5 in league play with their 15th win in the last 16 games. Bryant has won 11 of its last 12 league games and earned its second-consecutive weekend sweep.
 
Saul finished with two hits, a triple and a home run, and three RBI, while Noriega and Wyers each had three hits and two RBI. Pat D'Amico, Gavin Greger and Jacob Gaudreau added multiple hits to a 16-hit Bryant attack.
 
Jackson Vanesko and Jack Pletter combined for 6.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Black and Gold.

Key Moments
  • Aidan Bardi appeared to tie the game with a double in the top of the sixth but his drive to center bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double. Vanesko got a fly ball to right to end the rally.
  • Bryant put the game away with a five-run seventh inning.
How it Happened
  • Bryant scored first on Sunday, plating a run in the first. Noriega singled with one out, advanced on a single and scored as Greger singled to center with two outs.
  • The Black Bears plated the next two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the third. Quinn Murphy tied the game with a sac fly in the second and a first and third play resulted in a 2-1 lead for Maine in the third.
  • Bryant quickly tied it in bottom of the third. Three-straight singles from D'Amico, Greger and Durand tied the game.
  • In the fourth, Noriega doubled to left and scored as Wyers made it 3-2 with a single up the middle.
  • It remained 3-2 until the sixth inning. Saul started things with a drive to the wall in left that bounced out of the left fielder's glove as he crashed into the wall for a triple. The next two Bulldogs were retired but Wyers delivered a two-out RBI single on a 2-2 pitch to make it 4-2.
  • The Black and Gold then put the game away with a five-run seventh. Saul had the big swing of the inning as he launched a three-run home run to left center that traveled 445 feet. Two batters later, Noriega hammered a two-run home run to right field to make it 9-2.
