Bulldog Softball Splits With Southern N.H.
Tuesday
SMITHFIELD, RI – The Bryant University softball team split
a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire
winning game one 7-6 and losing the nightcap, 3-1 Tuesday afternoon
at the Bryant University Softball Complex.
With the split, Bryant's record stands at 22-14 overall and
19-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play while Southern New Hampshire
moves to 11-22 overall on the season and 10-13 in conference.
In game one, Bryant and Southern New Hampshire went into
the fourth inning tied 1-1 when each team exploded for five runs.
Southern New Hampshire's first run of the inning came when
Kelly Downs hit an RBI single. She was followed by a two-run single
by Nikki Cote. The Penmen got two more runs in the
inning thanks to an RBI single from Laurie Boland.
Bryant countered in the bottom of fourth when
Holly McCarthy
(Framingham,
Mass.) belted an RBI single.
The Bulldogs would push across a few more runs in the innings
courtesy of singles by Carly Muise
(Hanson,
Mass.) and Amanda Gagne
(Wilbraham,
Mass.) to tie the game.
Jordan Dargon
(Trumbull,
Conn.) made the home fans happy
as she singled and later came across to score the game-winning run
on an RBI double byDiane Cummings
(Westwood,
Mass.).
Stephanie Miller
(Titusville,
NJ) got the win for Bryant in
relief pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing no runs and giving up two
hits.
Game two saw Southern New Hampshire take an early 1-0 lead in
the first inning but both pitchers settled in as SNHU's Danielle
Lajoie and Bryant's Cummings pitched five scoreless innings.
In the top of the sixth the Penmen would add two more runs
and hold on for the win despite giving up a solo home run by Dargon
in the sixth.
Lajoie got the win going six innings, allowing one run, on four
hits, and striking out two. Cummings took the loss allowing three
runs, on nine hits, and striking out four.
Bryant will return to action tomorrow when they host Assumption
for a single, makeup game starting at 4:00 PM.
