BULLDOGS SPLIT IN DAY TWO OF REBEL GAMES; TOP IPFW, 4-1, FALL TO VALPARAISO, 12-0

Boxscore vs. Valparaiso

KISSIMMEE, FLA. - Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) struck out 13 batters in a complete game effort while picking up the, 4-1, win against IPFW in the first of two games for the Bulldogs in day two of the Rebel Games. Bryant dropped the second game to Valparaiso, 12-0.

Houseal surrendered just four hits and one run while walking one batter to get her second victory of the year, and Bryant's second Division I win as a program.

With the game scoreless heading into the third, senior Kate Thomas (Bedford, N.H.) blasted a two-run homerun to stake the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead. After a Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) walk, Ali Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) cranked a triple to drive in a run and give Bryant a 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the third.

The Mastadons would scratch across one run in the fifth, but that would be it. Freshman Lauren McCart (Vorhees, N.J.) added another insurance run for the black and gold, driving a double that scored Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.), giving the Bulldogs the, 4-1, victory.

The second game of the day saw an impressive pitching performance from Alex Lagesse of Valparaiso, who did not allow a hit to the Bulldogs in a shortened five-inning game due to a 12-0 mercy rule final. Lagesse allowed just two baserunners, both reaching on walks while striking out two. Neither runner advanced beyond first base, while solid defense behind her did not commit a single error.

Bryant stayed right in the game through the first three innings, as freshman starting pitcher Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.) allowed just four runs in the first three frames. Barrett seemed to settle in after allowing three runs on three hits in the first, giving up another in the third.

A Martin walk in the second and another by Bowen in the third were the only two players to reach base for Bryant, as they failed to get a runner into scoring position.

The Crusaders opened up the game with eight runs in the fourth inning, as Kelsey Phalen hit both a solo and two-run homerun in the frame. The solo longball came to lead-off the inning to get the scoring started, with the two-run blast coming later in the inning with two outs. Phalen went three-for-three in the game while driving in four runs. Six of the runs in the inning came with two outs, as KC Boldt had a two-run double and Ashley Wolter had an RBI single to go along with Phalen's two-run bomb, giving Valpo a 12-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would not threaten in the final two innings, falling to 1-3 in the tournament. The squad will take on SIU-Edwardsville and Maine in another double-header on Tuesday (9 a.m. and 11 a.m.).
