Bryant rallies for 7-6 win at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Bryant baseball team rallied from 4-0 down to earn a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over regional rival Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Park.
 
The Bulldogs improve to 19-16-1 overall with their eighth win in nine games. Bryant travels to Albany, N.Y., this weekend for a three-game series with the Great Danes. The series is set to begin on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
 
Bryant fell behind 4-0 after three innings on Wednesday before plating five runs on just two hits in the fifth inning to take its first lead. The Black and Gold then scored single runs in the seventh and the eighth to earn the victory.
 
Gavin Noriega reached safely four times and scored two runs, while sac flies from Gavin Greger and Drew Wyers provided the tying and winning runs. Liam Chamberlain and Landon White closed the door, retiring nine of the 10 batters they faced.

Key Moments
  • Matt D'Amato threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, limiting the Pioneers to just two runs in the inning.
  • Sac flies from Greger (7th) and Wyers (8th) tied the game and gave Bryant the lead.
How it Happened
  • Sacred Heart plated two runs in the first and single runs in the second and third. In the first, a throwing error on a comebacker to the mound allowed a run to score. A soft fly ball to right scored the second run.
  • The Pioneers scored on an RBI double in the second and a sac fly in the third.
  • Bryant was held scoreless until it scored five times on just two hits in the fifth. Two walks opened the inning and Noriega brought in the first run with a single up the middle. Pat D'Amico plated the second run with a sac fly and consecutive walks made it 4-3. Charlie Saul then greeted the new Sacred Heart pitcher with a double to left center. The first two runners scored but a third run was cut down by a good relay, giving Bryant a 5-4 lead.
  • The Pioneers responded in the sixth as a triple and a double opened the inning and tied the game. SHU would eventually load the bases with one out and a hit batter made it 6-5. Steak Newman then flew out to left and D'Amato fired a strike to the plate and Cam Papetti applied the tag to complete the momentum-killing double play.
  • A hit batter, walk and an error opened the top of the seventh for Bryant and Greger tied the game with a sac fly.
  • In the eighth, Papetti was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double from Zac Zyons. Wyers would make it 7-6 with a sac fly to center.
